Does anyone know If I could send my neck to the Custom Shop and have them give it the radius and frets I want. Do they do that sorta thing? I'm referring to the neck on my AVRI '57.

You'll have better luck drawing up your desired neck specs and sending them to Tommy at USACG. Warmoth and Musi-Kraft also build real nice custom furniture.

Wouldn't take more than three or four weeks with either of those shops.

Best of luck, HTH

As I understand it, the only way to get a custom shop guitar neck is attached to one of there guitars.

I can recommend a very good shop here in Portland call Portland fret works. Todd is a Fender trained (As well as Gibson, Martin so on and so on) He is a true craftsmen and would do a fine job.

If you would like his number, just ask ans I will PM it to you.

Is the neck really that bad that it hinders your playing? I have a 57 AVRI and a hot rod and I find no difference in playability whatsoever and the feel is very similar <_< Just my experience, of course YMMV.

No. It's not bad. It's just not as smooth and buttery as the fret board on my Am Standard. It gets sticky and with the vintage frets, the fret board grabs my fingers when bending or sliding from fret to fret. If I could find someone I could really trust to do it I would like it made like my Am Standard fret board, but I want to keep the soft-V. I love the V-shape just don't love the fret board. Does any of this make sense?

+1

My custom ordered Musikraft neck has become my favorite! It took 2 weeks to get mine...

Yeah it makes sense, I didn't particularly like the feel of mine at first. After a year or two though the stickiness has gone away as it gets more broken in, feels better every time I pick it up (Perhaps one of the reasons why people like relic'd and road worn shtuff, not my cup of tea but I digress >_>). Just play it hard for a couple months and give the board a good wipe down every once in a while with a soft cloth (just the old breath and wipe technique works fine). You'll know once it gets broken in, it won't be sticky. While your doing that, keep a sharp eye out for a used custom shop or hot rod for a more instant solution if one is lacking patience ^^ Personally I don't think it's worth the hassle and cost to re-do a good (IMHO awesome) neck as it will cost around $200 bucks for a refret and I have no idea what the sanding to 9.5" will cost on top of that, whatever it is you would be better off buying one of the fore-mentioned. Plus that wouldn't be good for residual value if the results didn't please you <_<

I wouldn't get the neck re-radiused and refretted personally.

I'd go on eBay and buy a neck off of a VHR57 Strat. They have the 9.5" radius and medium jumbo frets that your other Strat has and would be a straight swap for the current neck on your guitar.

That's precisely why that guitar is now waiting for me to collect it. As soon as I get back to NYC.

Man you just made my day. Thanks for the number. Do you know how good they are at the craft? Just wondering if maybe you've seen their work or heard anything about their skills. I suppose though if Fender recomended them then they must be pretty good huh? :D

They are for all intent's and purpose's a very good shop that is endorsed by Fender. I got the # from the Fender relation's people in Scottsdale, Ariz. I would be confident if I were you. I had a guitar masterbuilt by Todd Krause for me instead so I didn't use them but I wouldn't have had any problem using them whatsoever !!
Call and ask for Thane.
