because of the most recent acquisition, i decided to temporarily return my american std
to spec. wired the standard pickups onto the strat. well, not true. 1st, i wired up the ts pickups to neck and bridge, but i didnt have that complete satisfaction feeling.
position 2,mid and bridge has excessive midrange nasally quack, all other positions were good.
ok back to the issue.
all positions sound fine, except, maybe its just my ears, pickups sounded alittle thin to my ears, and had a slight nasal midrange overtone.... really almost unnoticable..

now, do you think a cold solder or overheating the volume pot could cause this???

i bought a 4 dollar cts volume pot, to see if that helps.

If volume is reduce normaly when you turn pot and you don't have noise. The pot should be good. Yes cold solder or bad solder could do some trouble.

Overheat a pot ? Almost impossible if you use the right tools and if is not the first solder of your life !!!! Pot solder lug is heat resistant.

Make sure you connect your wire a the good place. Check with 7ender wiring diagram and... re check.

You have the right pot vallue ? 250 k ohms and good quality, the original Am St . ?

Baked it a few times

In all seriousness, I once blowtorched a pot, to see exactly how hear resistant they are.

Well their quite heat resistant. That was a open backed CTS 50K pot that came with a Clapton Midboost kit.
After a good few minutes of the blowtorch (wouldn't have been less than 3minutes) there was no sign of the outer casing being damaged. So I took a look inside.

The carbon trace was completely undamaged. The plastic base that the circuit connector is fixed to, did suffer a bit of melting, not much. The connector itself was undamaged.

So they can take a good bit of heat. Don't go soldering with a blowtorch though. Infact be as light as you can with a soldering iron. Personally I like a good hot 40watt Iron and touch the component only briefly. Just enough to heat it enough for the solder to melt.
