My mother has a Fender Stratocaster in mint condition that was purchased either in the late 50's or early 60's and she is trying to find out how much it is worth. I would appreciate any help in the process of finding this information.

Anywhere from $20K to $60K depending on the year and color -- in mint condition.

I have a serial number, is there a way to find out for sure what year it is by that.

BTW - This is what my mother wrote about it:
Fender Stratocaster with Synchronized Tremelo, origional contour body, blond has origional instruction manual including price tag. Hard shell origional case covered with airplane luggage linen (brown) and inside plush lining (rust). Also have a Fender 2 jack amp (older tube type). It was purchased used so it is older than the guitar.

What you'll need to date that axe is the serial number. Also, if your willing and it hurts nothing to do it, remove the neck and at the butt end you'll find faint pencil markings with a date. If you've got a pic of the amp that would help a lot. It can be hard to date a Fender amp but this might help:

http://www.ampwares.com/ffg/ffg_faq.html#4-1

There's charts there to help date your Fender amp.

Good luck, you could literally have tens of thosands of dollars there.

Oh yeah, Gruhn is the man. He charges $50 to appraise your guitar based on detailed pics you email in with a detailed description of condition. A Gruhn appraisal is pretty much considered the word.

It might be the way to go with so much money potentially on the line here. He also provides consignment sales.

His clientele is huge, people come from around the world to shop his store. It's also a great website to drool over the hundreds of vintage guitars he offers for sale. I'd definately check that option out.

I am going to take some pics and get an appraisal soon. I was able to get the serial # from the amp and date it through the article on 20th Century Guitar and it is a Princeton and according to that site, by serial #, it is from 1953. The amp really doesn't look the best but my mom told me that it still sounds good.

I will post when I get the appraisal done.

Thanks again for the help.

 ...so it's a rare find and your mother could end up being a millionaire................BIG DEAL!!!

Just kiddin' with ya, it's not so rare, in fact it's worthless, the early 50's was terrible years for strats. I could take it off yalls hands for a small disposal fee, of course the shipping arrangements will be taken care of and no shipping fees will be charged.

I got the appraisal from Gruhn today. $45,000. Any suggestions on how to sell it without a huge commission. Also, are there really many buyers out there willing to actually pay what it is worth.

Thanks again for the help and sorry Hurricane - but you will have to pay top dollar for this one.

Well, you could sell it on Ebay, or Craigslist.

However, I think I would place an ad in Vintage Guitar magazine. That's where your potential buyers are. If you subscribe to the magazine, you can you post free Classified Ads --- sell it direct to the collector who wants it. Be prepared to send (via mail or email) many pictures of it (and its case), together and apart. The buyer will want to see closeups of EVERY part and number on it. You might want to suggest that the buyer come to you to pick it up (bringing cash or whatever you'll accept).

Congrats man. Thats great. Bet you're a happy camper. The advice in the previous post is good. Yes, there are plenty of people out there willing to shell out that much money for a good vintage guitar. Believe me, it'll sell.

From your nic I'd guess you're in the city, is that right? If you are there's probably a lot more options there then you know. You've got lots of rich kids just a few hours away in Princeton, Yale, Harvard, Berklee, Columbia. Maybe some posts in the school papers?

One thing I'm sure of, never show the guitar to any potential buyer without being in a secure location. Don't show it alone. Make them come to your turf. Get it insured now! Even if you only own it a few more weeks. One never knows.

I know you don't want to pay a huge commision, but consider one of the major auction houses. If you are in the city you know the ones to call. Sometimes a bidding war can bring you a lot more then you expected.

Keep in touch, I'd love to know how this all unfolds for ya.
