Dunlop makes a 6110 that is .115W x .050H .... 6120 that is .114W x .051H and a real
monster that is called a 6000 that is .118W x .058H !
Take your pick as all wire aren't going to measure exact ..... even the same wire :?

jpmist, muchas gracias for all your great pics. How did you do that neck profile- with some leather?
Yes those frets looks very similar if not identical.
I am waiting on Warmoth's frets in the mail and will post my findings. I am curious as to how these frest end up on the guitars- and moreover, they are not only on the guitars, but they do seem to have some work done to them at the factory. Mine look leveled off but I bought it new and they have never been worked on and your MIM strat's frets look the same. But I figure they'd not spend the dough to level them at the factory for a medium level guitar

Very welcome.

Am a retired dentist so I had some "baseplate wax" sheets that soften with hot water then hold their shape when cooled. I was a bit surprised to find that the necks aren't perfectly symmetrical, there's a fraction more bulk on the thumb side of the neck.

I sympathize with your search. I've been surprised how much difference the shape makes. My acoustics have comparatively thinner flat necks and I'm growing to dislike them in favor of the Strat's "V" shape. There's something about having that extra bulk there for my thumb as I play up and down the neck that feels really comfortable.

Not as picky about the frets, however. 2.5mm or 3mm doesn't really seem to make that much difference as long as they're not too tall. I have one neck with thinner vintage frets that I'm less fond of, seems they feel too tall even though they're not.

Good luck with your search!

Knew that micrometer caliper looked a tad familiar to me. The assymmetry is likely a result of quality control in finishing because the necks are manufactured using cadcam technology. You'll like find a more carefully done piece coming out of the Custom Shop. If, for example, you' had a favorite neck you wanted reproduced by them, you could either send the entire piece out there or, for example, do a rigid PVS impression of the entire back of the neck and pour a cast of that in die stone, and send it off, specifiying the radius you wanted for the fingerboard.

So much for my humble idea of using plasticine

I did buy a profile gauge for the job. I thought it was far too stiff to go pressing against timber though. So I loosened the screws off, the rods went all over the floor. I promptly cleaned em up with a old speaker and put em in the bin.
Shoulda shelled out a bit more dough I suppose.

That slight asymmetry on the back of the neck makes perfect sense to me. Their sanded by hand. A slight rounding of the rear of the neck on the thumb side sounds ideal to me.

[b]Neither of you two mates need weep. Those elastomeric impression materials are costly. Baseplate wax is far more economical, though you do have to take care if you're going to soften those sheets either in warm water or waved across an open flame. What the other materials offer us in terms of what they are used for are incredible accuracy in detail and dimensional stability. There's always some residue to deal with in softening baseplate wax. Now that I'm to finally have the Deluxe V-neck, the Clapton, AND the '57VHR in my hands, I might try that bit. I expect that the cross-sectional view will vary with the position on the neck.

As for the micrometer device shown, its most regular use the the measurement of the thickness of a casting,...usually a crown, or the metal coping which forms the substructure of a porcelain fused to metal crown when adjusting it for fit.

Recall that the EVH necks were designed to be deliberately assymmetrical. Ever play one? First, second, or third generation companies not-withstanding, they all have a great feel to them.

Thanks, I was tempted to do all my strat necks but thought that might be too much. It's definitely guitar porn, try explaining why this is cool to someone who doesn't play <grin>

Ceri?? Wait!! Hang around here awhile and learn where his talents lie. Do a search and find the thread in which he resurrected and rebuilt a guitar for us and laid out a manual for doing it as he went along. With your professional training, you'll really appreciate this guy.
