I have a chance to purchase what an internet ad says is a Squier Contemporary series strat with HSC made in Japan in 1986. It has 2 HB's rather than single coils. The cost is $450.

Is this worth it?

I can not seem to find any references to a Squier like this but I can find references to strats like this. Is it actually a Fender Squier series based on when it was made?

Help please.

Hi nicholsoni,

I found only 1 with humbuckers on eBay, asking $734 with shipping. It has a vintage style bridge instead of the system one tremolo (this one seems too pricey to me).

http://cgi.ebay.com/FENDER-MIJ-1985-Contemporary-DD-Squier-Stratocaster-/260672263531?pt=Guitar&hash=item3cb147156b

Here's an HSS model, they were only asking $350 with case (also, no system one trem). They say that the frets were worn, so priced a little lower than normal, I would suspect.

There is also a Squier section of this forum where posters may be more knowledgeable about Squiers here.

The value really depends on which version that it is, and what options that it has, but $450 with case doesn't seem unreasonable if it is in good condition and has a system one trem. How about posting some pictures. :)

The person with it for sale is supposed to send some photos later.

I was posting this here rather than the Squier forum simply because in my experience, not as many folks hang out in the Squier forum.

PS I also saw the one on ebay and it seems to be the same as that one in black.

If it's a Japanese Squire then that doesn't seem a bad price, depending on the condition of the guitar in question.

The only reference I could find for an HH Squier Strat was for the MIC Double Fat '))-'06 and the value of these is given as from $95-$120 but I think the price you see offered is quite fair for an MIJ.

After seeing some photo's I am begining to question it as it seems his good condition is different than my idea of a good condition.

It seems pretty well used including a large chunk of paint that clearly came from a drop on theback bottom edge.

I think the price now seems a little bit high for what it is...a project.

If the guitar has sustained damage from a hard impact I'd be wary of buying it especially for that price. You don't know what kind of damage may have been done to the more fragile bits inside the guitar or to the neck alignment etc.I'd give it a miss unless he was willing to drop the price quite a bit and offer a money back guarantee if you're not satisfied.
