I have a '03 MIM standard strat. the body is alder, or at least I assume it is, since most MIM strats are. I've never looked for sure. but anyways, the paint is wearing off nicely now. but one thing i've noticed is that the wood on the side of the guitar is dark, and the wood color on the top of the guitar is very noticeably lighter.

is the body plywood? cause I guess that would account for the difference in the color of wood.

does fender make guitars out of plywood? I know that some cheaper companies do make bodies out of plywood.

No, I don't think there are any plywood bodies, at least not coming out of Mexico or the US.

At worst, the bodies are multipieced:

Can you see any seams? As you can see from a picture at the link, they would glue up pieces and then veneer the tops. I believe the veneered bodies were only used on non-solid-color guitars. I don't know if they still make some bodies that way, however.

well, the guitar is white. so its not a see through finish.

i can't see any seams or anything like that. i thought maybe that the color change could have resulted from sanding or cutting. but its just that the color difference is so drastic. it is literally like a medium brown color on the sides, and almost as light as the maple neck on the top of the guitar.

Can you post a picture?

The color differences you see are probably due to the different pieces of wood that make up the body. When they paint 'em a solid color, they don't worry about matching up the woods that get glued together.

Even on a solid color, sometimes you can tell where the seams are. Gotta get the light and viewing angle just right.

Your guitar has a polyester finish. There would be no way in the world that you could see anything through it (not for solid colors anyway). My mexican is a 2000 model, it was artic white and I too noticed the same problems after about 2-3 years. It begun to look like the paint was staining, especially along edges and places where my skin made contact with it mostly (same as yours, dark brown, but my stains looked kinda like water stained rings or something), I'm a heavy smoker along with other people in the house so I thought it was just nicotine stains or something. I didn't think nothing of it, it looked pretty cool actually, it was looking relic'd and the paint was darkening up real nice. But it didn't matter, I was going to sand it all off and repaint it another color anyway, but not because of this reason.

If your the type that likes dirty looking relic'd guitars, then this shouldn't worry you a bit, I love'em myself.
