...was 1991 for me, I was about 20 because there wasn't any locally. When I moved to this new city to attend university, while all my friends were heading for the liquor store on Saturday afternoon after we had moved in the morning, I gave them $20 to bring me a 12-pack, but I told them "I have been looking a Fender Stratocaster pictures since I was 10 (early 80's) and today is the day I'm going to hold one in my hands" I took a cab, went straight to the music store, and tried an American Standard, and WOW, what a deliverance day that was... I still remember the feeling and excitement. It took another 10 years before I could finally afford the one that I wanted (2-color sunburst American series when they first came out in 2001...), but I went through the Fender-Squier MIM phase by buying one in 1997. While most guitar players in the 80's were attracted by the Jackson ,EMGs, Charvel, Ibanez and other famous pink-color guitar of the days played by guys dressed like ladies, I had always been fascinated by the look of the Stratocaster. In my mind of a young 15 teenager in the mid-80's, the Fender Stratocaster was a guitar for "men", while any of the brands I mentioned above were kids guitar...and at 15, who wants to be a kid :-)

How about you? And, when did you start to Make History?

I was thinking about that yesterday, trying to remember the first time I held and played a strat.

The oldest memory I have is when I tried out and bought my first Strat (a little over 31 years ago). It was in a back room at West Allis Music and my friend Dave was with me. I had decided to buy a strat and I had called a few Milwaukee area music stores to see what they had in stock and what kind of price they had. West Allis Music had the color (3-tone-sunburst) and neck (maple) I wanted and had a good discount (35% off), so over I went, and home I came with it. I still have the receipt and the guitar, of course.

I do remember trying out some other guitars (like an Ovation Deacon) at some other music stores, but I don't remember ever playing a Strat before I tried the one I bought.

wow i feel very young now lol

i held my brother's Stratocaster in 2004 and i was 12 then. i liked it and i wasn't really serious at playing guitar yet -- i was just playing around and playing tunes like The Godfather or something.

fast forward to 2007 lol

my cousin invited me to play guitar with him -- because he needed someone to jam with because my brother was out of town. i was into drums that time and was kinda reluctant at playing guitar when the only stuff i knew was how to change the 5 way switch [yes lol i sucked].

i accepted and i gave guitar a shot. he handed me my brother's Stratocaster [we love Stratocasters :D] while he held his own. he started telling me about some of the major chords and what sounded best together. i learned quickly but after the session my hands were shaking and sore. it was my first try to ever play guitar and i LOVED it.

so i came back 2 days later and we plugged our Stratocasters into his amps and we played a lot more. what's sad was -- i was moving to another country in 1 month.

...and here i am now.

i ached for a guitar the moment i set foot in LA -- and that didn't change when i got into Canada. i started pestering my dad that i NEEDED a guitar. he gave in when my birthday came and bought a Epiphone LP 100 on eBay. i was a bit psyched at first that i held a Les Paul in my hands but something was missing.

I wanted a Strat. :(

I knew I wanted a strat even before I ever touched one.

You just know about these things. It's like it was already programmed into my head about what I needed. Kinda like following instincts.

Likewise. There's some sort of primal attraction to the curves, horns and headstock shape. Well, there is for me anyway. I've went through phases where I thought I couldn't live without a 335 or a custom built archtop, but ultimately it's the tone, simplicity, and yes, the looks, of a Strat that have me hooked.

Unless you were brain dead, thanks to Jimi Hendrix, everyone in my circles knew what a Strat was and had to have one. The first time I ever held one was back in 1968. It was a 1960 factory pink one with a rosewood neck. I bought it dirt cheap because the color made it hard to sell and I wanted a Strat so bad, I could taste it! It cost me $50 which included the tweed case.

In 1969, I was sitting in front of a deli with this Strat, waiting for a friend. A guy walked up to me and asked me what was in the case. I told him. He asked for a look. I showed him. He said he'd love to give it to his wife for a birthday present and asked me how much. I told him, $100. He whipped out a $100 bill and handed it to me. I put the guitar back in the case and handed it over to him. He got in his car and drove away.

I took the $100, added $84 to it and bought a brand new white one with RW neck and HS case up at 48th St. in NYC. I foolishly lent it to someone who allowed it to get stolen (1974).

Man, I wish I still had either of those guitars today!

I think it was around 1974 that I held my first strat. 34 years later and I'm convinced it's the perfect electric guitar. A day without playing a strat is just a bad day in my book.

first time i held a strat i was trying out guitars and i was going to buy an epiphone as my first guitar. i had my heart set on it. then my buddy said "hey myles try this one out just to compare" he hated strats and thought that playing it would make me buy the epiphone it backfired. i bought the strat on the spot. it's a really dark maroon and it's still 4 years later my favorite guitar

i wish someone tried to do that to me -- i regret buying my Epiphone and i wish i would've bought a Strat. [my brother tried to turn me to a Telecaster but Jimmy Page won.]

It was 2003 and i had been saving my money far an electric guitar. I was waiting for the Guitar Center sale where they had Les Pauls for half price. When I was playing a carmel les paul I looked up on the wall and seen the metallic flake mint green american stratocaster. I put down the paul and picked up the strat. When I plugged it in and started playing dust in the wind on a clean setting i was suprised by the warm sound I could get out of it. I then procceded to kick it into over drive and walk out some crazy train. I fell in love that cold morning, nothing can seperate me and my green machine.

i came to the realization this week that the only guitar companies that make really solid guitars that just have that "feel" these days is Fender for electrics and martin for acoustics. i'm probably just going to build up a fender Stockpile and forget about other brands.

Aww man, you should at least have an LP or 335 for that "other" rock tone. I've got an Epi 335 thats actually pretty nice. Threw in some SD Phat Cat 90's and it sounds like a guitar 5 times as expensive. All for a couple of hundred bucks.

the only thing i can say is...it´s like magic when you found your "partner". there is no other word. The way you feel playing the guitar, the looks, everything. From the colour to the frets. it´s like know "this is it for me....it´s perfect". It´s like love at the first sight.
maybe this is too much but i can´t explain in other words.

actually your right i'll probably buy either a Es-335 or a white falcon eventually but still unless something really changes i will use strats as my main guitar
