its to protect the pickguard so the guitar is protected. I have friends who leave it on but its better to take it off

Take It Off The Day You Know Your Not Going To Return The Guitar. For Me That Was The Afternoon I Got Mine Home. It Does Affect The Sound And Pickguards Are Reasonably Priced.

This is my thought every time I see someone do that. Either that, or 'wow, that's a pretty long band name.'

Also I didn't take mine off on my acoustic until the edges started fraying and then I pulled it. Looks better, but then scratches start to actually show up. Ugh.
My strat and jbass didn't have it on when I got them, but I would have pulled them.
