A tobacco burst Hohner Les Paul copy. I traded it for a black Squier Strat and I only went to the store to try out a distortion pedal!

My first was a cheap Washburn acoustic that I recently traded on a new Amer. Std Strat in Sienna Sunburst/maple fingerboard. 8) But my first real guitar was a '98 Amer. Std. in turqoise/maple fingerboard. Still have that baby, and it's beautifully worn in. :D

Enjoy your youth dude. It'll be over quickly enough.

my first guitar was a cheap Peavey Tracer performer series U.S.A , it was a strat copy .. curiously .. the headstock shape was identical to a strat . i cant find any photo on the neck of it . But im sure fender made a lawsuit for using their headstock shape .

wish i still had it :( nostalgia , it was a decent guitar . paid 80 $ on a pawnshop- in 1996

edit : i found a photo of a guy who has one

it is my MIM '96 Fender Traditional Fat Strat
got it new in 1998 for RM950
my father paid for it
he gave me a budget of RM1000
it was sort of a celebration for my graduation
it is probably the last Fender Strat below RM1k budget in Malaysia
still own it and it is the only electric guitar i have/need

1980 G&L F-100 with a series II neck.

Bought it in 1989, (for $290 bucks from a friend) and I still have it.

I recently had it set up again, and have been playing it like crazy for the last few weeks. I have left it dead stock, and I probably will leave it that way...

I have no pics of my first electric guitar. But here is a picture of a picture of my 2nd electric guitar I got for $350 in 1983. A used 1979 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe with mini humbuckers.

Times have never been better than they are now. People didn't have much money in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. So most couldn't afford a high dollar instrument. Maybe some pudgie rich kid. You have a fine selection right now of great instruments to choose from. Have fun now, and no regrets. If you'd been born in the 40s or 50s, you'd be preparing for the "big sleep" about now.

Come to think of it (born in '52), I could take a nap right about now

But right, most of us didn't have high end gear because it was expensive and probably most of our parents weren't all that for it. Mine were okay for violin in the school orchestra because they'd heard that playing an instrument was a major plus in getting into a top college. But the violin was free (my grandfathers) and the lessons free (through the school). If I wanted to play guitar, and they were very much against "that noise ... the garbage they play on the radio now", I'd have to buy it myself.

That was the way with most of the non-upscale kids I knew. You either got nothing, some cheap plastic "guitar" or possibly a real but unplayable one they got for $10. As I think about garage bands and the 60s, very few kids I knew were in one and for many, probably due to lack of gear. I got lucky in that I got a Mustang and an Ampeg Jet from my uncle for $100 -- far less than they were worth -- because a huge favor was owed.

Had he stuck to the $250 he wanted (a fair but not exceptional price given the near mint condition, age, etc. of the gear), it would have been "no deal." At that time, I made $1.65/hour bagging groceries for about 20 hours a week and my take home was around $28 (from memory). My mom let me borrow the $100 and pay her back in 5 installments.

I no longer have either, but that's what started me on the path to ruin ...

+1 for the old guys

Remember, back then the minimum wage was $1.29 per hr. And to save for a guitar one would join the US ARMY starting E-1 for about $225 per month. And if you made it to E-5 you could afford a decent used guitar.
