I'm pretty sure that Dhani left Rocky untouched as the artwork on it was George's own not by The Fool (an avant guard art group from London in the mid to late 60s)as some of John's guitars were, most notably the"Peace"guitar, the J-160 E that had been played on so many Beatle albums. After The Fool painted the J-160 E(That had really been George's as John's was stolen after a concert-in Scotland I believe)and John sanded it down to the bare wood along with his Casino that The Fool had also painted. He had done this after Donovan had told him that the guitar would resonate better with the factory finish taken off and a very thin varnish applied.John ended up using the guitar for his famous Bed-In -For-Peace and drew 2 caricatures of him and Yoko.Yoko still has this guitar and it still wears the strings that John last put on it as does the Casino.BTW The Fool also painted the famous SG bodied Les Paul that Clapton used on Disraeli Gears.

There was a special on the other night called "Recording The Beatles" and it showed this Daphne Blue Strat and a Blonde Tele that John was using. Great narration by Sir George Martin too as well as great shots of the studios.

It seems like everyone is trying to make something out of nothing here. Why can't this guitar just be one of Harrison's other Stratocasters? Granted, we all know that he, along with Lennon, acquired a '61 Sonic Blue Strat in 1965 in time for the Rubber Soul sessions, but that guitar became "Rocky" and it remains "Rocky" to this day. I would "imagine" that by the time of this 1971 session Harrison probably had a number of Stratocasters, both modern and vintage with rosewood and maple fingerboards, so wouldn't it just be easier to assume that the guitar he's playing is a nothing but a late '60s maple board light blue Stratocaster as opposed to some rare "mystery" guitar? I mean, to me there's not much of a mystery to it. Here's one just like it:

Get a copy of Spitz' book (The Beatles - The Biography) and you'll find George did have several Strats besides these ones :

The book also goes into detail about how to play that opening chord to 'Hard Day's Night' which is a G7 with an added 9th and a suspended 4th.

George painted Rocky. The Fool painted Clapton's SG.

There is a great Facebook site and booked called Beatles Gear.
That has some great pictures of Rocky, and John's Strat.
I too am puzzled by the change in neck in the video. But Harrison did mention that he was playing slide during this period on Rocky, and I can only assume that he did the same on John's and perhaps changed the neck on John's '61. Sadly not much is known of what happened to John's strats. His '61 Sonic Blue or the '80 'The Strat" that there is a picture of in the vinyl LP The John Lennon Collection. The last time Rocky was played was the concert for George by Andy Fairweather-Low. THis pic taken in 1999 may be the last taken with Rocky. Image

It is my hope that the Custom Shop make a tribute of this guitar. it is LONG overdue! Hopefully the Harrison estate will give permission.
