Hey guys!

In a week or so I'm gonna take my strat for it's first flight, and I'm def a bit worried.

I'm not sure which case to buy for it, to keep it safe. I would really like to get a classic fender case, but I'm worried it's gonna break (the case and the guitar) which seems like a huge waste of money. So then I was thinking about a molded plastic fender case, but it feels like a waste because I really want the classic one.

So what are your experiences when it comes to cases; will a classic one survive w/o much damage (to both it and the guitar) or do you think the molded one will be a better choice?

And no, I don't care if the molded one in theory will keep it safer, the important thing is in practise. :P

Cheers.

SKB case is the safe bet. MF has a nice deal right now too, $89.10 and free shipping. Or if you play ebay you might get one for 60-70 with free ship.

Ya don't think a classic tweed case would work? :P

I have the SKB Fender branded Tele/Strat case for my Tele and while it is a good case I really don't think I would trust it to the baggage handlers at any airport.

SKB does make a Flight case for the Tele/Strat that is sturdier but it does come at a higher price. Just depends on how much you are willing to spend to protect your guitar.

Yeah that looks really nice, and that's cheap compared to where I'm @.

I've basically only got two different options tho, either the moulded one:

or the classic tweed/brown tolex (w/e color I'd go for :P): Image

Either one of those would be fine for normal use but I don't think I would trust one on an airplane. For that you need something more substantial, some kind of flight case.
like this-http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Musician's-Gear-Electric-Bass-Metal-Flight-Case?sku=541698
or this more expensive one-http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gator-GTour-ATA-Bass-Flight-Case?sku=545867
(sorry, you'll have to cut and paste those, I can't get the links to work.)

How much is your guitar worth to you?
Pay accordingly.

Having had airlines crews damage a few guitars, I only use 'Rock Hard' when flying these days.

I flew quite extensively and used a StudioLogic SL10 flightcase.

Very inexpensive and very strong. Fully airtight too. The first time I saw a baggage handler bounce my guitar (in case) across the tarmac, I became quite furious and a little worried. However at baggage collection the guitar hadn't even gone out of tune (tune down a whole tone for flights).

Sam Ash used to stock em.

Sorry I don't know who stocks em in the US now.

Other than that, you can't go wrong with SKB and I'd pay Mike's suggestion a lot of attention.

Yeah, I would def get one of those better cases, but I don't live in USA. If I had time I'd still order one, but I've only got about 4 days until I'm leaving, so there's not a lot of options right now.

I've been trying to find the cases you tipped me about but it seems pretty impossible to get one in time, so do you think the standard molded one could work (or the tweed one, altho that's hardly likely)? It's gonna be handled as "special bagage" and they're supposed to be a bit more careful than the normal bagage handling are. But yeah...

Heeelp.

Pred, where do you live?

In the UK
http://www.brandoniguitars.co.uk/cases.asp

Or Hiscox
http://www.hiscoxcases.com/

Or if you fancy a splurge, these are about the best out there.
http://www.castlecases.co.uk/

Wherever you live, thats the kind of thing you need to be looking for.

The SKB case is good and strong. For cargo holds you need a bit of heat/cold protection too. I go to the local guitar shops and get that grey thermal wrap paper off them that the new guitars come wrapped in. I wrap the guitar in that before putting it in the case.

Or you can do like my old bassist and another guitarist I know used to do. Take the neck off the body, put both in your hand luggage wrapped in towels. Makes for a boring flight but your guitar is not subject to idiot baggage handlers.

If you ask nicely the stewardess might put it in their personal coat locker. My '78 Strat sat in first class when I brought her back from Canada.

I live in Sweden (ie north of Europe, Scandinavia :P). My dad has a really nice case for his bass (made for flight etc., expensive), but I'd have to make a special order and it'd take weeks. I'll try to find something simular to that but it's hard to find anything other than the ones I allrdy posted.

So I don't know what to do right now...

Haha yeah, but that's gonna be impossible. First off I don't think they'd allow it at all over here, nor would there be any space for it (filled planes now before x-mas).

I like Nik's idea of taking it apart and packing it your carry-on...very clever!
