Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have a completely foolish question to which I believe I know the answer, but in the hopes that I am mistaken, is there any way to securely fit a C-Shape Fender Neck into a V-Shape Cavity of a Stratocaster Guitar?

I currently have a 60th Anniversary Fender USA Deluxe Stratocaster that I absolutely L-O-V-E! I also own a modified Fender USA Standard Telecaster with a C-Shape neck.

The troubles is that the C-Shape Neck (Do not believe it is a 'Modern C') of the Telecaster plays and feels like a perfect match to my hand.

If this can be done without extreme cost and investment, is it possible to find a C-Shape Neck with the same dimensions as the Telecaster Neck, but with a heel that will fit the cavity of the 2006 Strat?

Any help, advices, or clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Happy Holidays!

I may be wrong but Im pretty sure the heel of the necks should be the same as long as they both are four bolt pattern or both three bolt pattern. The neck cavity should be the same too. V-necks and c-necks have the same heels I think.

Im not sure of the answer, but to clarify are you talking about a square ended telecaster neck into a rounded stratocaster pocket?

Hi JGorsuch,

The shape of the neck (C, D, U, V, etc) doesn't matter. All that matters are the neck heel dimensions, and the neck pocket dimensions on the body. Typically American and Mexican Strat bodies can accept most other American and Mexican Strat necks without problem, provided that both are same number of neck plate screws. A Strat neck on a Tele body, or vice-versa, may be an issue because of the square end vs round end of the two heels ( I have not tried this). It would be easy enough to try it and see if the screw holes of neck and body line up. If the screw holes do line up, no problem, go ahead.

Hi JGorsuch: to be categorical about it, you can swap any Strat neck into any Strat body. People will tell you there are issues swapping between US and Japanese parts: if they say they've had those problems then I guess they have, but I have never come across any such difficulties. All Strat neck heels and neck pockets are made to the same dimensions regardless of origin - in my experience.

You can also fit a Strat neck to a Tele body, though it will leave little gaps visible at the corners of the pocket.

You can't fit a Tele neck straight into a Strat body, because of the squarer shape of the Tele heel. You have to modify the Tele heel first, which seems a shame.

However. I suspect it is not so much the C shape of the Tele neck your hand likes as just the much fatter carve that some Tele necks have (the "baseball bat" neck). If you can, try measuring the thickness of the neck front to back at the first fret (that is to say, from the front surface of the fingerboard to the middle of the back of the neck) and see if your Tele neck is significantly thicker in that dimension than the Strat one. For example (from memory), my US Strat neck is a touch over 20 mm thick at the first fret; my Tele is more than 22 mm. That's a fair bit of extra volume of wood in the hand all round.

So probably what you need to find (Ebay or wherever) is a Strat neck at the chunkier end of the range. There was a thread on this very subject just the other day on this Forum and people were saying the SRV Sig neck seems to be one of the fattest.

Or you could order a Strat-style neck of particularly fat dimensions from Warmoth. Very nice.

It would be a way to go, and would spare your Tele from sad cannibalisation. Whadayathink?

Cheers - C

All,

Thanks for the feedback. I am keeping the Telecaster Neck on the Tele, it feels like a pure bliss to me.

I just am not a fan of the 'V' Neck Profile, but the cavity/heel grooveof the body concerned me with some 'Modern C' necks being able to fit well into that pocket.

I need to take the Tele neck off and do some measuring of everything but the heel. Find out what my Radius are, and dimensions. I will see if I can find a Strat Neck that has the same dimensions out there on EBay or Warmoth etc.

The Tele neck is definitely fat. The shape isn't Modern C at all. It has a fat neck, but the fret board is thinner than the V and more rounded.

Thanks for all the help, if you have suggestions on how best to measure the Telecaster neck dimensions for comparision, please let me know. Shooting in the dark a little bit here.

Hi again JGorsuch: for measuring the radius of the fingerboard you need a radius gauge. These are handy ones:

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools/Speci ... auges.html

If you want to measure front to back of the neck you will need calipers of some sort. Like these:

http://www.homedepot.com/Tools-Hardware ... ogId=10053

Or these:

http://www.homedepot.com/Tools-Hardware ... ogId=10053

To measure the width at the nut you could use those calipers or you could just use a steel ruler.

If you are not in North America all of that stuff is available anywhere else on the planet too.

Cheers - C
