I just purchased my second american deluxe strat. The first was an Deluxe Ash strat and the second is a maple necked Deluxe with what is probably an alder body. I have to say that Iove the way these guitars play and love the features but I HATE the s1 system and the pickups. I dropped a set of Noiseless in one and some Tex Mex in the other and they are now phenomenal. Anybody else have difficulties with the S1 system?

I had an Am. Deluxe for a couple of years before I got the EJ. I had no problem with the S-1 switch. I liked most of the options. Even if you don't like them, you can always just not use it and it's just a regular strat. The Am. Deluxe is a great axe with or without the switching system.

I agree with cryingstrat. I've read so many bad reviews about the American Deluxe p/u's and never even gave them a chance. I played one just yesterday when I went in to check out the new Strat's and couldn't believe how nice this guitar sounded.

I found the S1 sitching to be very useful and thought it made the guitar much more versatile. I do agree that it didn't have that "traditional" strat sound, but is was still bad $@!. A darker, more full sound.

The funny thing is I thought these p/u's kind of gave to best of both worlds. An almost HB type sound, espcially in the neck positon, but still had the SC chime at the same time, if that makes any sense.

Anyhow, to each his own, but I think they are great guitars all around. Wish I had one.

I too am looking at an American Deluxe. I played one at a local guitar store the other day and was majorly impressed with it. I was thinking of ordering a Lone Star Strat, but was a little discouraged when i found out it was mexican. I own and play a mexican tele. I love it to death but after playing an American Deluxe I think I will be getting one. Not knocking the mexican stuff, don't get me wrong but i want an American one.

I purchased a american deluxe ash strat a few weeks ago and yes im also having a bit of trouble with the S1 switching system. i have yet 2 find a good use of when 2 toggle between the S1's settings, and find the guitar just sounds better when the S1 isnt being used. Also... is it me or is the american deluxe strats neck and body slightly fatter than the standard american strat? or is that just me..?

If you ask me, a thicker neck adds to the tone-you have to get used to the feel though. I guess Fenders have never been shred-friendly. Regarding the S1, things are really simple; don't like it? don't use it! You never know, it might come in handy in some occasions...The way I see it, the real problem with my del/ash/maple is the kind of nasal tone which also lacks warmth even when I compare it to much cheaper single-coiled guitars. Any ideas? Is it the wood only? We have to reach a conclusion regarding the SCN pickups! There 's been a lot of debate about them in guitar shops, why not here?

I just measured my deluxe at the nut, 1.700, that makes it my
widest and most comfortable Fender neck. Outdone only by my
Gibson SG at 1.710

I completely agree. The neck is like butter. I don't use the S-1 switching.

I played the same non fender guitar for years and the deluxe was the first strat I really took to and I bought one. I really like the picks ups and switching. The bridge pick up sounds good with the S1 switch activated with a high gain sound. You can get a really great jazz sound with the neck pickup S1 activated and the treble rolled off a bit. Without the switching the pick ups are excellent. It's worth experimenting with the different settings.

Regards to the S-1. I have an Am Ash Dlx w rose. At first I also didn't really like the sound. At first I thought it was the SCN's, so I ordered a set of Fralins and new quality pots and a paper in oil tone cap. Before the new pups arrived, I wired up the new gear in a new pickguard, and installed it w/ the SCN's. It made a huge difference. At first I thought it was just me; so I wired up the pickguards and SCN's with quick connectors, and A/B'd them. The SCN's sound WAY better. I kept the SCN's and put the Fralins into another guitar.

I've heard people tell me that if you don't like the S-1 you can turn it off, but from my experience, I thought my Dlx sounded a lot better with out it.

YMMV
