I think that what's making the black guard work, is the bevelled edge ply with the white underside. It's effectively drawing a neat white line around the guard - adding a bit of emphasis and helping ease the contrast..

If it was just solid black on blue, it wouldn't look half as effective.

White definitely. Very classy. But I'm a sucker for the vintage look and put vintage parts on my Strats even when I know their modern counterparts are better...
