I haven't used flatwounds since i was about 15,I bought them under the naive assumption that smoother strings would be easier to bend-they weren't.As a rule flatwounds are much harder to bend due to the number of wraps of flat metal tape around the core wire.A lot of jazz players use flatwounds as they are quieter for instrumental jazz passages but they are about the only ones that use them these days.I do however use flatwounds on my bass guitar and they sound great.
