I just changed the strings on my 50s strat, and I noticed how odd the tuning keys actually are.

Even though Ive pulled my strings a lot to check on its safety for keeping the strings in, it looks unsafe.

Anyone who thinks Im worrying for nothing?

I love the vintage slotted tuners. Quick and easy string changes. All you have to do is make sure you put enough turns on the non wrapped strings to avoid slippage. I've got em on my EJ and never have a problem with them.

I agree. I wish they still came on Strats as standard.

I have the vintage tuners and I wrap as much string on the peg as I can just to be on the safe side. About a week ago I dropped my strat on the floor, it bent the high E tuner key and pushed out the cover on the back. I took some pliers and pressed the cover back down to where it should be, needless to say the tuner key is still kinda crooked. I figured I would start to have tuning problems on that string because it turned so easily after all this, but it's been a week now and it's holding tune as good as before.

Never had any problems with the vintage tuning keys.
I like them because there are no loose string-ends to hurt my fingers.

Vintage tuners are cool. If only more tuners had the slot!

The Kluson types with the slot are (or used to be) called 'Saf-T-Post'. I love 'em, no poked fingers and they keep tune well enough for me. I still see people attempt to use them like standard post tuners (the wrong way), though, with string ends out-and that definitely WON'T help in keeping a guitar in tune.

Is it ok if my low E string is only wrapped for like 1.5 turns?

Cause I cut off where Fender says it has to be cut, but I didnt know if it would be wrong to let the string a little longer...
Would it hurt in any way if I cut it off further so that I could wrap it around more?

That shouldn't be a problem. I usually only use 2 turns on the low E. That fat, wrapped string doesn't really slip much at all. It's the non wrapped strings that need quite a few turns.

I also use 2/2.5 wraps on the low E.
3 to 4 wraps on the plain strings.

Right now I'm using a 58 low E string and all I can fit on the peg without it rubbing the bushing is about 1 1/2 turns. No problems with tuning though.

I also love the fact that the vintage tuners don't run a blood drive. Playing guitar makes fingers sore anyway, we don't need any help from tuner-string pokes, hehe. Seems like Fender had everything perfect the first time way back then.

I even prefer the slotted to the locking tuners I had the Am. Deluxe.

I guess you can cut the string at a length you prefer?

For the low E, A and D i cut them about 2 inches past the tuning post.
G, B and high E strings about 2.5 to 3 inches.
