Hi guys,

I'm the one a little below with the new American Deluxe V-neck. I just try to take off the protective cover from the pickguard and I found out that there is a layer of a sticky thing all around the pickguard. How can I take it off and not hurt the pickguard? I've got aceton here at home but I think I shouldn't use it. Please help cause I have a big gig tomorrow an surely can't go like that. Everything will be sticking on pickguard now ( hair, dust, dirt, everything ). Already tried with mist and wipe but can't go off. PLEASE HELP ME !!!

Do not use acetone or lighter fluid -- those two compounds will craze plastic.

Here in the US we have a product known as "Goo-Gone" which is intended for such situations. I believe its active component is citric acid derived from oranges, lemons, and the like. If you cannot find this locally, aerosol furniture polish such as "Lemon Pledge" may work. Do not spray it directly on the pickguard though -- shoot it onto a soft clean cotton rag (a T-shirt will work) and apply in small areas using a circular motion.

Best of luck, HTH

Contact a local body shop and ask them for some pre kleeno or wax and grease remover. This is used in the paint booth prior to panting to clean the painted surfaces. It is is a mild solvent that will not harm any plastic or paint but will remove adhesive. I can attest to this as I am an automotive painter.

Good luck

i had the same problem when i got my stratocaster, my solution was to use a tiny bit of wd40 (oil) on a cloth, and just wipe it over the sticky stuff, the stick comes of really easily and the pickguard looks shiny and new, if you do use wd40 MAKE SURE NOT TO GET ANY ON THE GUITAR FINISH NECK OR PICKUPS, or any other part of the guitar for that. if it leaves a horrible smell just wipe over the pickguard with a damp cloth. be careful. hope i helped

I used methylated spirits for mine, and then buffed off the cloudy residue it leaves with a soft cloth.. worked a treat. but I did panic a little when i took the plastic of my guard, rest assured it can be removed rather easily mate :)

ditto and i use to paint. lol
although, i would go with the WD40 idea. this stuff is a great cleaner but does leave a slight smell for a day or two.

This is, "EXTREMELY URGENT"? :? :? :?

All you have to do is keep rubbing your finger(s) or thumb on the sticky part. It will begin to ball up at which point this residue can be picked off and then the little bit that is left can be fully wiped away with a tissue.

FYI: Goo-Gone is in fact, scented naptha.

Pretty much any standard furniture polish spray, Pledge etc, will remove this in seconds and leave no evidence of it's use. Plus, you've almost certainly got some in your cleaning cupboard!

The deluxes urethane finish is a thick bombproof affair. I'd use anything to hand, just be carefull not to saturate the scratchplate.

Petrol would be my choice, zippo lighter petrol. Put it on a rag and wipe the plate.

Thanks to every single one of you guys. Woke up in the morning (time difference) an saw a whole lotta answers !!! You are great. In the end I used warm water+very soft cloth+lemon based soap ( my x was a bit useful at last !!!) for the big surfaces and earbud+wd40 for the details left. Her first gig tonight and she is looking dreamy. Thank you all guys once more. Hope I'll have some answers-solutions for you one day... Greetings from Greece !

Have a good gig Petros.

I must say I think you're a bit brave to gig a unproven guitar. I usualy give em a good few rehearsalls before they go onstage.

Ooohhhh , don't scare me now!!! I'll go with Fender=Proven !!! My American Standard never disappointed me. I hope this one will not either. She has to prove herself even better !!! Spent whole morning cleaning and playing her at home. I really believe it can last 500 years. The only weak part I would think is the switch and generally the electrics. Hope they'll prove me wrong.
