Being the old fart that I am and in spite of the fact that modern technology is a beautiful thing, NOTHING beats tubes for pure, genuine 'organic' overdrive. YMMV.

Anyone have the Fulltone Fulldrive 2 MOSFET?
And how would you compare that to the OCD?

I see those are both on sale for the holidays...

I use 2 overdrives for slightly different flavours and live settings ~

1) Fulltone Full Drive 2 Mosfet, which is absolutely fantastic and worth every penny. For Tyronne's benefit, here's how it compares to a Fulltone OCD:

It has more options for tailoring your OD sound than an OCD, but is slightly less responsive to the dynamics of your playing. The Full drive also has a seperate sensible Boost option which is just enough to lift for a solo. You can just use the pedal just as a Boost if thats what you want, or select between modern and vintage overdive sounds with its other options. The pedal is pretty transparent - you can still pick out the guitar that you're playing. If you select the FM switch, it will flatten the amount of mids in your drive sound - absolutely glorious on a Strat.

2) TC Electronics Vintage Overdrive, nice and transparent with slightly less mid push and more bass than a standard Tubescreamer. Again not cheap, and now no longer made

I don't use it now, but if budget is an issue track down a Digitech Bad Monkey which is the best plug and go, lower end overdrive pedal ever!

Thanks for your opinions. Does someone of you use Boss OD-3? I think this one sounds quite nicely.

Is it necessary to have also a noise gate with an overdrive? Does it produce lot of hum noise?

I have both a Monte Allums Supra Plus modded Boss OD-3 and a Monte Allums H2O Plus modded Boss BD-2 (as well as an Allums Ultra Plus modded CS-3). I use the OD-3 with my Fender SCN equipped Strat and the BD-2 with my GFS Fat Pat humbucker equipped parts guitar. Each has a very different sound that compliments the SCNs and the humbuckers. I do not use one to drive the other or switch which guitars I use them with.

No need for a noise gate. The modded pedals are quieter than stock and a careful setting of gain and level produces very little noise for the effect I want.
