Hi there,

I would like to purchase an Overdrive pedal for my Highway 1 Stratocaster HSS. I am looking for a nice transparent overdrive with long sustain. Nothing with distortion or any other aggressive flavour. Which one would you recommend me?

Don't you know which one could be here?

Try out a Russian Big Muff or an American one.

Yep, you're right Nevin as several things in use on that one.

Take your pick. Each one will get mentioned sooner or later.

The most popular Overdrive pedal is the Fulltone OCD v4. It is incredibly well made and incredibly versatile. I have hardly heard a negative word about the OCD and pretty much belongs on every guitar players pedal board.

They sell for roughly $135 online and you can pick them up used at Guitar Center for roughly $100.

The OCD is true-bypass and very clean for an overdrive pedal. It can get both overdriven Fender and Marshall tone. Though there are better Plexi pedals on the market, this pedal is pretty much the Swiss Army Knife of overdrive pedals.

No, I don't work for Fulltone. .Just like the pedal.

I believe Steve uses a built in sustainer as well.
Add that to the fact he sold his soul to the devil, and you will be right on his sound

Philcan,

I would steer clear of the EHX Big Muff if you don't want crazy big distortion. That is all the Big Muff does.

I don't think read your post or I have no idea why he would recommend what you are saying you don't want... Way over the top distortion. Big Muff = Over the top distortion. I have a Russian Big Muff and it has a place in music, but not as a primary overdrive, unless you are a total rivet head.

I use my Russian Big Muff for whaling, heavy solo's and that is about it.

I like my blackstar HD dual more then my ocd. The blackstar is bit more transparent and I have more control over my sound.. THe ocd is right up there and its an excellent pedal....I got the 19volt adapter for my ocd and a 16 volt adapter comes with the HD dual black star. Both pedals are built like tanks......Everyone has different tase in sound so I would go try as many as you can....

Peter, does the OCD sound better at 18v? I have never tried it like that. I am going to have to take a look at the Black Star pedal. I have not had a chance to play with it or even see someone playing with it... Youtube time...

I run my OCD with an 18-volt wall wart. It seems to have more grunt and a better S/N ratio than with a 9V battery.

+1 Arjay

Philcan, if you're considering making one, there is a pedal called the BYOC Overdrive II. It's got a boost and the TS808 with mods and it can do 18v but if you make it mosfet boost the boost colors the tone a hair.

I'm not affilitated with BYOC or it's associated. But the pedal is like a Swiss Army Kinfe of Tube Screamers.

+1 TTSC DIY is fun and you can a great bang for the buck. Learning to build pedals is on my list of hobbies to take up. It saves money and keeps you off the streets and out of the clubs.. lol

Fulltone products are great.

I have Boss Blues Driver which has been great. It just enough without sounding thin or muddy it provideds a nice warm overdrive.. It is not expensive either.Been a great pedal.
