Link Wray, of course.

The end of the development of Rock N Roll was certainly at Chuck Berry.

After Chuck, stick a fork in it, it's done!

African Americans who created the soulful blues sounds to escape their painful history of slavery. It then sped up in a period of 5 years and yes Leo was right there with the 54 stratocaster perfect timing but all good things are meant to be and planned by powers greater than us it seems. From black people who suffered so much came a music form which gave us white assed city slickers so much fun and enjoyment where the smiles on our faces lasts longer than the end of the song.

Quite eclectic in the aggregate. Last time I asked a young person who lays claim to that heritage if he knew who Robert Johnson was he replied.........then.... :? and finally.....
My reaction was..........and, if you ask me....although you won't....but I'll tell you anyway.....if it wasn't for the Brits we wouldn't have either...because all our American bluesmen were over there where they could earn a living. It wasn't happening here for them. Not until the term 'race records' disappeared. And I'll back up even further and go into jazz. Ever hear of Josephine Baker?? There's a story we should all know.

C'mon Doc, enlighten us on ms Baker.

I for one don't know and would rather hear the tale from a trusted source than a bunch of webpages written by strangers.

Every time I think of her, I think of bananas.

I think it was Nevin, wasn't it?

Cheers - C

lol very good ceri.

i think rock n roll was already in play long before folks realize it.
i think it kinda just creeped it when folks werent looking for it.
should this be the case, the big "who was first" debate will never be answered w/o argument.

I would give credit to someone like Beethoven. His music is called "Classical", but it is the root of rock n roll IMO. Many times, rock players (Yngwie for example) really sound like they are playing Classical music, just on guitar, without all of the other instruments found in an orchestra. :)

None of the above....I recall an old episode of the Flintstones, where Fred was a , pardon the expression, 'rock star'. Fred Flintstone was the original 'rock and roll star'! His character was named Hi Fye!
