It seems to have sped up from 1949 with small USA hits until 1955 Bill Hayley and then bang Elvis made it international in 1956. I asked my Mel who is ignorant of these facts and she said didnt Elvis invent it hahahahahha. Elvis was the first comet clearly but to me rock n roll in my mind what I know of it is Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bill Hayley, and Elvis Presley. Skin the gizzards of a possum I should play those 4 numbers in my show
Johnny Be Good, Tutti Fruiti, Rock Around the Clock and Hound Dog. In my mind Chuck was the one who was the first great guitarist.......and wasnt Hendrix the lead guitarist in Little Richards band back then theres one for you hahahahahahha Richard subdued Hendrix for many years but cream always rises to the top, this is fascinating keep the thread alive maybe one of these greats if alive will come and talk to us, have finished my new song for Betsy Sue May will have it up on youtube vinnypop soon. I've heard from several sources that Ike Turner's Rocket 88 is the song that's credited with kick-starting rock and roll.I would be interested to find out when the term rock and roll was first used.I've heard that it was derived from a song that stated something like "We were "Rockin' and Rollin" all nightlong."

Vin, I think you're wasting your time contacting Little Richard. He's a pianist that isn't much interested in guitars.

Drop Chuck Berry a line instead.

We seem to be running around in circles here. Berry's not the hub of the wheel by any stretch. Important in the evolution of the modern musical form of the alternating back beat I give him a first, but if you listen to his musical form prior to the release of "Rock and Roll Music" and "Johnny B. Goode"i.e, "To Much Monkey Business" and "Maybelline" it's more jump blues oriented.

Little Richard's piano style quite an important factor here and, particulary where Berry is concernd, Johnny Johnson's without which much of Berry's work would have had a totally different quality. Johnson's piano was an integral part of Berry's 'train keep a'roll'in'' feel.

Try this on for size: Compare the foundation musical form of "Mystery Train" and "Maybelline". You'll find them to be the same.

You got your years mixed up. Yeah Hendrix was in Little Richards band in 1964 long after the "invention" of rock & roll being discussed here and long after Little Richard's heyday. I doubt a 13 year old Hendrix strumming a broom pretend guitar in 1955 would have got the gig with Little Richard.

And it Little Richard did not "subdue" Hendrix for many years, it was more like many sporadic weeks 1964 into 1965

"That's All Right Mama" by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup - 1946.

They make a good case for this song here:
