Neither of them.

Muddy Waters is attributed as being the first person to use bass, piano, drums, harmonica, guitar and vox only, in a band format.

The first instance of rock n roll goes right the way back to 1916 when the term rockin and rolling was first used. There are many contenders for the first rock n roll record. I don't think there is a definite cut off point where you can say, that's it. Rather it's more of a transformation from cotton field blues and big band swing.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe's "Strange Things Happening Everyday" (1944)
Good Rockin' Tonight" by Roy Brown (1947), later covered by Wynonie Harris
Rock the Joint" – either the original 1949 version by Jimmy Preston or the 1952 version by Bill Haley
The Fat Man" – by Fats Domino, recorded in December, 1949
Rocket 88" – either Jackie Brenston's original, recorded on March 5, 1951 with Ike Turner and the Kings of Rhythm, or Bill Haley's cover, later in 1951
Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock" (recorded on April 12, 1954) a cover of Sonny Dae and His Knights 1953 song
Elvis Presley's "That's All Right (Mama)" (recorded in July 1954), a cover of Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup's 1946 song - which itself has been cited as "the first song to contain all of the elements... associated with rock and roll."

In my personal opinion, Bo Diddley is/was the first modern rock 'n roll guitarist.

I'm not saying he "invented" rock 'n roll, but he certainly had a huge influence over the style of music that eventually became known as rock 'n roll.

Yeah like everyone is saying it was a slow evolution from many sources and wasn't like overnight BAM! there is rock & roll. There was no big bang for rock & roll, but the general public that was not hip to this type of music all see rock & roll happening overnight when Elvis first appeared on TV or when they first heard Chuck Berry on the radio or whatever the case may be for certain individuals not hip to this music that was going on for years already. Then these people romanticized and exaggerated those events and then all of a sudden it becomes "[insert name of any 50's rocker here] invented rock and roll".

edit to add: My far fetched theory is that television invented rock & roll (not the musical genre, but the lifestyle) since it safely brought that music into so many suburban homes during the 50's who wouldn't have dared ventured into seedy juke joints or urban centers to experience this music otherwise. TV brought rock to the world. Radio wasn't as powerful since half of rock is the image (Bill Haley's weird hair curl, Elvis' gyrations, Buddy Holly's glasses and alien looking for the time Stratocaster, Chuck Berry's duckwalk, etc, etc). Along with the music, those visuals urged kids to latch onto rock & roll and it just exploded.

I would like to hear from some of the "distinguished elders" here that were around during the early or mid 50's to chime in and give their take on this topic. To hear it straight form the source since I can only speculate.

A continually evolving synthesis of blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, jump blues, and country. It wasn't invented, it was embellished, and certain key artists put their individual stamp on it. e.g.Berry reworked Elmore James' signature guitar riff and created his own, as well as the back-beat we've all come to know and love. Jerry Lee Lewis and Fats Domino reflect piano styles common to the musical genres aforementioned...and don't forget where and how Doo Wop factors into this. We are strongly guitar oriented here, but the evolution of, and contribution of vocal groups of various styles and venues cannot be overlooked side by side with solo artists and bands of the era. including various combinations of these. It's a veritable tossed antipasto salad.

To add to nikinija's history, DJ Alan Freed takes credit for 'coining' the term but considering how much of "Maybelline" he stole from Berry, it's likely he 'borrowed' it from the reference Niki makes in his comments.
Doc
