I use Road Hog cables for both instruments and for amp-speaker cabinet use and have found them to really stand up to constant use. They're very pliable yet very very strong.

Got a Solid Cable as part of throw in deal last year and the thing seems indestructible.

Would I pay retail for the things? Dunno. But they certainly look good and might last forever.

I use blue cables when I play blues, red for rock, brown for Jazz.

Just kidding, I am having one of them funny days. There is a lot of good advice above already.

Plant Waves has cables in several price ranges that are well built and sound very good.

Monster has a bad rep in the Hi-Fi world for building overpriced, overhyped cables. I wouldn't waste money on them.

here's a couple links:

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/ ... sku=331650

Price seem pretty even here, maybe I'm missing the boat though 8)

I'm not sure if musicians' friend reviews mean much if anything, so you can give them as much credence as you like. I hav eto say this is the first time I've heard people say anythign negative about monster cables, other than they are more expensive than the cheap-ass cables sitting in the box by the register at Guitar Center for impulse buyers.

If your sound matters to you, buy a decent cable. spend a couple of bucks. You allready spent a couple grand on the guitar and amp, now you want to cheap out on the cable? Pry open the wallet and get a decent cable (whatever brand you like) that has a warrenty. $40.00 doesn't seem to be outrageous to me. YMMV

Other than monstercables being terribly overpriced theres not much wrong with em. Not worth the money in my opinion. Price is one thing that will not determine how good or bad a cable is. I'm sorry but $130 for that earlier linked cable is a stupid amount to pay. What does it possibly do that no other cable does? Nothing is the short answer. What is the capacitance rating on the cable per foot. That is about the only thing that matters with instrument cable.

ok, 130 bucks for a cable might be pushing it a bit. I think I paid 42-44 bucks each for my 2 18 footers. In the links I posted abaove the planet waves and the monsters are within a couple bucks of each other. 130 is a totally different story! I was comparing a cable for under 50 bucks to the 5.99 cheap-ass cables that hum before you plug them into the amp!

But the price of the cable isn't a guarantee that it is going to perform mate. Thats what I'm getting at (the last cable I bought was a £28 planet waves btw. Still happy with it after 10 years).
All you need to do is look after a low capacitance cable properly. It will last you a lifetime and sound equally as transparent (cables do nothing for your guitar sound) as a expensive cable.
All that vacuum shielded (what do they do, make it on the moon?) stuff is nonsense, nothing more than a slick sounding sales gimmick.
If you buy a 1000ft reel of this at 36 cents a foot (70picofarad a foot, exceptionaly low. Never seen cable that low a capacitance before)
http://www.redco.com/shopexd.asp?id=542
Comes to $360
And 160 jack plugs here at $273
http://www.rapidonline.com/sku/Cables-Connectors/Connectors-Audio-Video/Jack/6.3mm-Jack-plugs/74324/20-2183

Have made yourself 100 cables for $633 that will perform equally as well as any cable. Thats $6.33 for a 10ft good quality cable with good solid plugs on the end. What more do you need? You could sell em for $15 a time and do the world a favour.

QFT.

If I wasn't so lazy I would make my own cables! But for 42 bucks I'll buy the Monster. Not that I think it's any better than other cables of similar capacitance, i've just had good luck with them, particularly the connections at the jack plugs. (Don't get me started on .25" jacks. I hate 'em.) I just don't understand all the hate for Monster cables, although for 130 bucks I sure as hell would pass on 'em myself.

If you buy a well made cable there are other factors too. If you keep your cable around 10"-15" most good cables won't make a big difference.

The construction is important. Do you need an angled plug on one end or both straight? I tend to like an angled plug on my amps because it lays the chord straight down to the floor with out putting as much down pressure on the input jack of the amp. A straight plug sticking out the front is like having a small lever magnifing the down pressure on the input jack.

I like a serviceable cable where the ends can be opened and fixed. The cheapo's are sealed and unserviceable. They don't last and can't be fixed.

The other factors are how it acts dragging on the floor (I hate sticky cables that catch and drag), and how easily they want to tangle. If they have good rotational stretch without twisting liken a pretzel..I like that. You don't want to spend most your time untangling your cable.

I use an angle plug if the jack is on the top of the guitar (like on my Mustang) or a straight one if it's on the side (like my Les Paul)
