Good day everyone,

I was thinking of replacing the white pickguard on my Honey Blonde Hwy 1 with a Tortise Shell one. I was wondering if any pickguard with 11 holes would fit? I have found one from an American Deluxe. It has 11 holes, like mine but will it fit smooth?

Also I have never changed a pickguard before. Is it a difficult process? I guess what I am saying is should I just pay the guitar tech to do or is it simple enough that I can do it myself?\

If you feel its simple enough could someone please post a quick how to guide. I will be honest I don't even know if I have to take the strings off to do it.

Thanks in advance to all posters

I recently just changed the pickguard on my HWY1 strat. As far as pickguards, most 11-hole standard pickguards should work without a problem, but just make sure you check out the hole positions before you buy anything. As for the changing of the guard itself, it's nothing complicated. The way I went about it was as follows:

1. Take off the guitar strings.
2. Remove the volume and tone knobs, as well as the knob for the 5-way pickup switch. (Also be sure you remove the screwed on washer like pieces that are under the knobs from the pickguard as they hold the underneath components onto the pickguard)
3. Remove all pickguard and pickup screws
4. Carefully pull up the pickguard, you don't want to rip any wires loose, which would require re-soldering.
5. Now all you have to do is switch pickguards and replace all the hardware in the opposite order as you took it off.

Sorry that was so long, but I hoped that helped. Also if I missed anything somone be sure to correct me.

Charger46 said it great.

One thing I might add is to "label" the pickup location (bridge, middle, neck) just in case.

Changing a pickguard can really change the vibe of your guitar for fairly little money and labor. Have fun!

I have to add:

Measure your current pickup height. When you put the pickups in the new pickguard you can put your pickups back where they were.

How do you safely remove the knobs without ruining them, especially the toggle switch knob?

Well first I'd use Skelefish's advice lol....then if that doesn't work you could try using a piece of string or a shoelace and wrap it around the underside of the knob then gently pull up. Honestly when I took mine off I just put a ziploc bag on the guitar body and used a flathead screw driver to gently work two sides of the knobs until they popped off.

I had a big problem getting my 5-way swtich knob off too, I just found some needle nose pliers and worked on it and it finally popped off and hit the ceiling and flew back down...just make sure you don't lose it lol

Toggle switch knob should just pull off with using your hands. Mine did. For volume and tone knobs I just slid a butter knife under them and wiggled it upwards.
