I have something going on with my 06' Std Strat. At higher volume, if you take you finger and run it down the pickguard , either side of the pick ups you can hear a " sound like you are doing the same on a mic". My other strats dont do this. Is there someting not grounded corectly? I am at a loss on the source of this.

It is stock other than a set up.

Thx,

J

Does it do it with a certain pickup selection or in any position of the selector switch?

No....regardless of selector switch postion, the sound is audible both sides of pickups almost entire length of pickguard. Its almost like the pickguard is a fourth low out-put pickup...very strange. You must touch the pickguard for the sound to appear.

thx

Premising it is not static electricity across the guard (which I tend to doubt), this is a microphonic noise. Usually, this happens when pickups aren't fully coil SATURATED. Just dipping them in wax is not enough.

One dead giveaway is if you talk into the pickups at a higher amp volume and your voice can be heard through your amp. This would be proof positive that your pickups' coils are vibrating and hence, not wax saturated.

Just out of interest, Is this caused by the wax not being hot enough to get to the right level of viscosity to permeate the coil?

You could have a go at re-potting them. I know forum user Ceri has done this. Might be worth giving him a shout.

Its probley static. I have the samething going on also right now. Always happens this time of year at my house. Stick a dryer sheet under your pick guard.

The cheapest way is to have your current pickup set (re)potted. They get dipped in a wax bath until the coils are indeed, fully saturated.

As to how I test to see if coils are fully saturated, I knock on the top of one of the coils with one of my finger knuckles. If I hear a dead sounding, surface 'tick', I know the coil is saturated. If I hear a more '3D' type 'clunk', I know the coil isn't.

As to "genuine" anything, remember, we're talking assembly line here. The pickups are dipped in wax for what has been pre-ordained as 'adequate' by percentage samplings. Unfortunately and evidently in your particular situation, your set needed more time to absorb the wax than the aforesaid, 'adequate' time allotment and was not among the samplings.

If you are going to wax pot your pickups check out the Stewart McDonald website, they got some info on how to do it. I understand too hot a temperature or too long a soak on plastic bobbins could warp the pickup.

They use parafin wax (surfs up)
