Hello all,

I have been practicing some fingerstyle songs in DADGAD on an acoustic guitar.

However, because my dad also wants to play the guitar but in standard tuning, the guitar goes through multiple tuning changes.

I broke the high E string twice during the last 2 days, and was wondering if the tension change was what was affecting the breakage the most, or if there is something else (nut or bridge, etc.) that would affect the strings while tuning.

I'm not sure if this happened to me on an electric, but does anyone have an experience like this?

Even changing my strings after only four hours of use I still break them when I am playing very hard. It's just the nature of the beast. I've broken strings many times on slow songs just bringing up the intensity of certain parts of the song. You just need to be ready to play the same notes on different strings/ positions in lead sections and God knows there are several different positions for the same chord to get you through a single song.

When strings break due to rough spots on the guitar they tend to break in the same place.

Check where the string broke. If near the ball end or where it would sit over the saddle there's your problem.

Sometimes if you turn the tuning pegs too fast the strings will break due to the quick tension change.Try tuning from D to E slower and see if that makes a difference. Also try graphite in the nut slots and on the bridge the strings may be binding somewhat and that may be a contributing factor.
