Congrats on a nice instrument at a nice price and for accomplishing all those measurements.

Glad to help on the neck rolling.

Merry Christmas!!!

Hi Andy: thanks so much for that measuring. :)

Lummy, that's a skinny neck! That is thinner than any of my Fenders - for example, my 2005 MIA Strat is 20.9 mm at the first fret and 25.33 mm at the 12th (excluding the frets, obviously). I have an old Squier neck knocking around that is a touch slimmer than that: all my other Fenders are fatter.

The only necks I generally come across as thin as your CP60 are to be found on Ibanez shredder type guitars. How interesting.

I wonder how your measurements compare with the way necks were carved back in the days of genuine '60s guitars? If only someone had a 1964 Strat (say) that they could measure for us. ...Hey, Orvilleowner? :D

At least as far as ubergeeks are concerned your measurements have turned out surprisingly more fascinating than expected. Thank you!

Happy Christmas to you and Ms BigHair - C

interesting enough, however the feel does feel thicker than my am std, do you think that the 12 in radii has something to do with it, another way to measure, is by using measuring tape that seamstress would use. that might also explain the shallow routing for the heel.

Been on the ALE Andy ? :) I blame johnny foreigner for bringing in that metrifithingumy, if they had everything their own way we would all be driving on the wrong side of the road, thats one way we can outwit them all whilst abroad , stick too your guns everyone stay on the left it's the only way we can give a bit of confusion in return

Merry Christmas

Well, given that I was looking at the same photo so am I! Let's be idiots together - how cozy. :D

Yes, the correct measurements are much more what I'd have expected to see on a traditional Fender. After all, there would have been no need for Ibanez to invent their Wizard necks if Fender had already done it 20 years earlier...

(BTW: am I the only one who prefered the Forum's old style laughing emoticon? Ah well...)

Hehehe!

All my other Strat necks are 26mm at the heal. Does this solve the hole Neck heal pocket issue we had earlier in he thread?

Anyway, I kind of regret putting tone control on the bridge pup.... Kinda miss the edge it had before... Still, totally reversible.

And Rip, yes, I have been drinking lots of Ale!

At 8.1% I had a very Merry Christmas! (I too prefer the old style...)

Cheers!

Ahh can't believe I missed this one, my fault for not paying enough attention I suppose? Very nice guitar Andy, and a great addition to the big hairy family :)

I was wondering though, how does the 12" radius compare to 9.5" ?

On the hunt for a new guitar myself so I wondered what u thought?

Cheers, Drew

Hi Drew,

Bit late on this one....

The 12" radius fretboard is great! Very comfy to play. My Godin Exit 22 has one too and if I was going to make my own neck I'd go for a 12". If low action is your thing then IMO that's going to be easier to achieve on a 12" than a 9'5".

I recommend the CP60's mate. Possibly Fenders best spec'd, and best priced Strat on the market today. Worth popping down your local and having a biddle on one.

Cheers!

Andy

Or a 14" radius. Or a compound radius running from 12" near the nut to 14" in the middle up to 16" at the dusty end. Hmmm. Now that would be interesting...

Where's The Nutter got to recently? I wonder why I wonder that at this moment...?

Cheers - C

My Big Hairy Partscaster has a Stewmac 9.5" - 12" compound radius....

Image

....And I like it! :D

Excellent quality and a good price too. But then Stewmac necks are made by Mighty Mite and despite a recent thread where MM got a proper bashing this ones a blinder!

Building a neck with a compound radius is way out of my league! Probably best I crack on with building a standard radius before I get too excited.

I hope to meet up with the Nutter very soon as I have a Fender Bassman Amp for him. looks a bit like this one...

Image

Its a bit battered and not currently working so should be a nice little project for him seeing as his current abode is not guitar building friendly. At the very least it could make a nice cab for his Vox head? I know bugger all about amps so I'll just have to wait and see what he comes up with.

Well, whatever you do, don't plant the idea of a compound radius in his mind. No sir, that wouldn't be a good idea at all.

Would it...? :D

I'm sure you'd rise to the challenge! "If anyone can, Ceri can" :D

I do have some measurements written down somewhere ...

I would direct you to the Andre Duchossoir "Fender Strat" book which has some neck thickness measurements tabled. I remember that there was a large amount of variability in the values. Things were much more "hand made" back in those days ('50's and '60's), as we all know.

My 1964's neck isn't "stock" any more. The fretboard was "leveled" a bit at it's last refretting (to remove some wear divots and to give it a graduated radius -- slightly flatter in the higher frets).
