Hi my name is Dave ,

I was wanting to play guitar for awhile now and ive been tight on money so i decided i would go through some yard sales around where i live and i see if they had any decent guitars for sale. Well i came across this guitar below at a guys house who's son went off to college and he had no more use for it. There was no price on it so i offered him 250 and to make a long story short he sold it to me. now i know that fenders are good guitars and this was in really good shape , can anyone with some good knowledge tell me abit more and if i got a good deal or not?

Hi Dave: don't know about anyone else, but I can't see you photos. When I click on the links I get a message telling me to type in a pass key.

Why not post the photos on this thread and then we can all see?

Cheers - C

A quick 1st look would suggest you have a 70s vintage, 3 colour sunburst USA Strat with appropriate Fender case.. $250? Bargain of the decade if it's real. Still a great bargain if it's a re-issue.

Good sign that the case is included. Most fakers won't include a genuine case when trying to unload a dodgy fake/tarted up copy.

Tried dating it through the serial number?

Whats on the back of the headstock? How many bolts hold the neck to the body - would expect 3?

More pics, back of the guitar please.. and a closer shot of the bridge..

You win. If its real which I think it is you got about a 3000 dollar guitar for 250 bucks. Great find.

Ha! Well the Guitar Dater Project says from the serial number that it was made at Fullerton 1978 - 81:

http://www.guitardaterproject.org/fender.aspx

Don't count on that though. That website is not infallible - and headstock decals can be faked.

Though the serial number is not coming up as one of the notorious fakes - and for $250 it's not a horrible risk, is it?

Wow: maybe a pretty nice find! Congrats.

Cheers - C

Dave - welcome and it looks real to me. Nothing about this one screams "fake" and the case looks period correct (you could get either the molded case or a black tolex case in 1979 and 1980; it think it was just the molded case starting in 1981 or 1982. Looks like it is a real "under the bed" find. These have gone from being kind of scorned guitar on the used market (worth $300-$600) to being "vintage" guitars worth $2,500-$3,000 in the past 10-12 years.

Hard to date these from the serial number alone; Fender used these "S9XXXXX" numbers up though 1981. Also it couldn't be a reissue; Fender never has done a reissue with a hard-tail bridge and they don't use that placement of the serial number (the USA 70s put the serial number on the neck plate and use a number starting with "V"; the import reissue put them somewhere else).

Wow this is the sort of tale I love.

Well done DJ, now before anyone chimes in on a high horse. Instantly dismiss all mention of taking the guitar back and explaining how you unwittingly paid a lot less than the guitar is worth.
Thats happened a few times that I've seen. Always thought it was a bit silly.
