I just completed some minor (but scary) surgery on one of my Strats. I have a mahogany body strat that I have never been able to set up properly and I usually just get it out and play a few licks then put it back in the case. Today I decided I need to try and get it set up right. Close inspection revealed that the big E and A string were much too high at the nut. This would not have presented a problem if it were not the roller nut and I could have just cut the slots a little deeper. I read the manuel and decided to give it a go. Removed the roller nut and as my luck usually runs, no shims under the nut. Anyway after some measuring and trying to figure what I needed to do. I filed the nut slot about .025 deeper on the end needing adjusting. Made two attempts, removing a little wood each time. After reassembling and resetting everything the guitar plays beautifully. I was just about to the point with this one of taking it out to the pool and chunking it like someone related in another thread. I think it may be a keeper.
