Many many years ago my ex-girlfriend and I got in a huge arguement. She took my number one strat and chunked it in the pool. After I got it out and dried her out, she was fine!!! THANK GOD!!!! Its still my #1 strat!!! But it did stay on top of the water!!!

Any body wholly or partially immersed in a fluid experiences an upthrust equal to, but opposite in sense to, the weight of the fluid displaced.

In other words if the weight of the displaced fluid is higher that the weight of the guitar it floats if not, it sinks.
