I have this brother in law who is a know it all $@!&#*% and he's always talking smack about strats because he's a gibson guy. Well he says that all the High end les pauls are one piece guitars. I've heard this said before but what exactly does that mean. I mean the neck is attached to the body somehow right? Fenders bolt on. Les pauls aren't all carved out of one piece of wood are they? If so why would they be better than a strat. I realize it's all personal preference I mean I like les paul's too. They have a purpose in music of course but I love strats better and He pisses me off when he starts downing strats. He thinks he knows everything and he can't learn anything new because he already knows it all. Get it? A real dumbass. Anyhow, I don't like to argue with someone unless I have accurate information. So what about one piece les paul's. Are the cheap ones two piece and the expensive ones one piece? He dont even belive they have a truss rod. They have to have a truss rod right? I've been looking on the internet but haven't found this info yet. Sorry to bring up a gibson thread on a strat forum but I just would like to know a little about this subject.

I'm guessing that Gibson has a stand of trees somewhere that grow as maple on one side of the trunk and mahogany on the other......right?

Two totally different guitars and designs. Him saying that one is better than the other shows he knows nothing about guitars (and is probably biased).

Both designs have positives and negatives depending on what you like in an instrument.

Next time he tells you somethings better than the other ask why and then insist on him to prove everything He says. You will end up having a good laugh out of it.

Or ask him if he likes the music made by Strats. If he says no then recite a dozen or so famous players and reconfirm it with him. If he still says no ask him to go into detail what about their tone he doesn't like on each one.

If you look for a Gibson truss rod its found under the truss rod cover on the headstock.

I found some info on this subject. It's very interesting how different the two guitars are. They really are both great guitars. I just like the sound and feel of a strat. And I dont care to here anyone talk down about em. Both have played a huge role in the music I love and enjoy. I've always wanted one of each but there's one more strat I have to have before I get a LP. Thanks for the help guys. It's humorous how ignorant my brother in law really is. Even funnier, the poor guy cant play very well.

this guy sounds like a first class idiot.
beat him with talent bro. study music and learn to play well.
when he listens to you he will wonder how you do what you do on a piece of shiot guitar.
what les paul does he own?
both type of guitars have their place in music and in collections everywhere. maybe he's just using his "know it all" attitude to make up for his lack of skills.
hey if he owns a paul, ask him why he isnt any better than he is. lol

if he wants to get nit picky LPs are more plywoody than strats anyway xD

But seriously the LP neck is joined to the body with resourcinol glue. takes a heat gun to remove it.. but its not one piece of wood.

This is a real can of worms - even for LP players. I do know that the only way to guarantee that you will have a 1-piece solid mahgany body (under the maple top) is to get one of the Historic reissues - and pay the price for them.

It seems to me that I've seen some of the production line LP Traditionals with 2-piece bodies, but I could be wrong. I do know that the LP Traditionals are "weight-relieved" and have a series of "swiss cheese" holes drilled in the mahogany under the maple top. The LP Standards are actually chambered - they are almost a semi-hollow under the top like a thinline Tele - and have been chambered since 2007.

A little mis-information goes a long way with some people.

Ask him how many pieces of wood are used to make a Gibson neck compared to a Fender.

He has an epiphone that won't stay in tune. I told him It could most likely be set up the right way and be fixed but he won't listen to that either.

ok so dont waste yortime with this azzclown.
be kind when you have to. make sure he treatsyour sister right.
(they are married right) sounds more like to me thathes maybe just trying to put you down for some reason. if you like it his is better and yours is garbage type of thing.
so learn to lay well like i suggested and beat him with your garbage gear.
so enough he will be coming around wondering how you do what you do.
tell him a aman with his high standards should want to play the things you play as he dont have the garbage gear it requires to do so. lol

Since he has already invested $3,000 in a guitar instead of $1,000 he has to continually convince himself he has made the right decision.

It's not about how many peices of wood are in the guitar, no point arguing about that.

Just tell him his guitar is really cool, because it is, so is yours.

Regarding to 1 piece guitars yes, Gibson says it about the body. Cant get a hole guitar (neck+body) from only 1 piece of whathever wood it is. So fender has their 1 piece guitars also from Custom Shop guys.

Fenders bolts the neck on the body with screws.
Gibson just GLUES the neck with the body.
Go figure.

i was pretty sure that for the most part les pauls after the mid sixties or so they started using a two piece mahogany body with or without a maple cap.

but i learned it watching pawn stars so i dont know how true that is but it seemed pretty legit. a guy brought in an early 70s lespaul custom and claimed it was a 1960 and that was one of the factors proving him wrong.

i assume its just easier to assemble a two piece rather than one
