I'm new to electric guitars, and am wondering what the difference is between a 3 single coil strat with the selector at the 2 or 4 position, and on the other hand a humbucking pickup. Could someone clarify that for me?

WELL BUD First off the,the single coil are noisier, unless your middle pickup is rhwound,to cancel the hum, only in the possition 2/4 ,quiet like a humbucker, but, most humbucker are balanced coils, back to back, not with a 3 single coil setup in the position2/4 two pickups in series, but they wont be balanced, thus different tonal qualities.plus humbucker are much thicker tone singles half the tone but with clarity brighter but not muddy like some humbuckers can be.
In the scenario you describe it would be very different for sure.Mister

if you are looking for clean tone,50s 60s musical influences,
go for a STRAT,American only.
if you are looking for more late60s 70s rock tones
go for a Les Paul American only.

If you are looking for good dirty sounds, hoe do you figure that the Les Paul is the only way to go?? I mean how many rock players play strats with single coils?? And this is Fender forum why would you reccomend A Gibson??? I say that if you lie the way a strat play and feels to you than play it. if it be a mim or a mij or what ever. I have a mia and a mij strat and i really prefer the mij. So that is my soap box. Yuo just cant catagorize music like that.!

On a typical Stratocaster(3 single coils,5 way switch) the #2 and 4 switch setting will yield the famous 'Strat Tone". Think Mark Knopfler on "Sultans of Swing" or Steve Miller Band "Took the Money and Run" or any Eric Clapton. That is the bell-type clean sound that many associate with Strats. I have several Strats set up with 3 singles, and love the sound. If you put a humbucker in the bridge position, it will sound quite different, with a fuller sound, and more mids and crunch. If you wire it up correctly with the HSS format, you can get that "STRAT tone" by splitting the humbucker when in the bridge/middle pickup setting. You get the crunchy humbucker sound along with the Strat tone in one axe. I like it!!!!
I love Strats, and own quite a few, but Les Pauls rock too!!

I agree with Jim. This thread is nonsense. By the way...since when is the Les Paul the guitar that gave birth to rock n roll? Early rock was usually hollow body guitars. Seems to me that the Buddy Holly tone was pretty damn important to early rock and that was a Strat.
