OK, Bought in the US. In that case I tend to think that it was assembled in the US with MIJ body and neck, one of the scenarios brought up by John C. I can't imagine Japan sending them to the US with US parts, but who knows? I can believe they were sent to Australia from Japan, but like you say they were on sale in the US also.

I believe there was an 8 month period in the 80s when no US Fenders were made. American made Fenders were certainly scarce when I bought this one.

I think the answer would be to positively ID the stamps and marks on the neck and neck pocket, but this is beyond my expertise. Maybe someone can help.

Cjpeck, mate, I don't want to sound pushy, but PLEASE unbolt that neck and give us a look.

And leave the pickguard where it is, keep it original mate. (just sayin')

When I bought this, I really wanted a vintage Strat ,and now it almost is.

I guess that's what is meant by " Make History ".

Keep in touch mate. GOODONYA .......Mark

maybe I'll take the neck off when I change strings next time. I'm just really reluctant to change anything at all on her, she really does play that well.
I haven't even had more than one string off at a time since I bought her.
really should give her a deep cleaning though. the big pics I posted really shows how dirty she is.

The "No USA Fender" time period was in 1985 - Fender production ceased in January, and FMIC didn't make the decision to build their own factory until later in 1985 and really didn't get much production going until 1986. However, they were a much smaller organization back then and really relied on Japanese production to fill in the gaps.

The USA parts on an MIJ were pretty common back then - Fender would have just specked a Kahler Spyder bridge and FujiGen would have ordered them and put them on the guitars.

Regardless of whether they were assmebled here from MIJ parts or just assembled in Japan but not labled as such these were really well made guitars that were killer deals.

I know I wouldn't trade mine for anything. Well, almost anything.
It would take a hell of a lot to get it away from me.
Maybe a trem-setter would help the floating bridge issues.

Sorry for revamping this old thread but I too have this guitar. When I stumbled across your post and saw the pics and i knew it was the same.I ve had this guitar since about 93 and have always wondered exactly what it was.I always thought it was a franken giutar that someone had just costomized, but this morning i got curious.I researched the crap out of it and found out that it was assembled here in the States but with $@! parts in 88-89.I also agree it is the best sounding and playing Strat ive ever played! My freind just bought a brand new US Strat, cost him a fortune, and its nowhere near as smooth as mine.I bought this guitar for like 300$ in 93, it was at the Great House Of Guitars in up state New York stuffed in a glass case with about 25 Mex Strats. This guitar jumped out at me so I Played it and Paid it,been rockin it ever since.Turns out they re called HM models for Heavy Metal. They were made to compete with the Jackson and Ibanez at the time but barely sold and only lasted a few years 87-89 I read, the earlyer ones look a bit different with humbuckers! Anyways good to see another one! Im trying to post pics but cant figure it out?Mine is metallic red with white pickguard but otherwise identical.

G'day fstsleeper, I am one of the posters in this old thread and an owner of one of these guitars. I also started another thread more recently on this subject, titled - "Eighties Strat Identity Crisis".
The OP of this thread (cjpeck) contributed greatly to my later thread and we covered the subject in even greater detail. It's not too far down the list, if you care to check it out.
Assembled in the US you say? That was one of the scenarios brought up. We never did reach a 100% definite conclusion.

Goodonya ....Mark.
