As someone who has worked in the both the paint (car) business and someone with a few guitars, I can tell you in general that lighter colors suck as silvers show the least and darker colors such as blacks and dark blues show the most scratches and imperfections. However, because the typical sunburst is a multicolored guitar and you typically have both dark and light colors in the bursts the darker areas will show scratches more so. I would think a more important question would be the type of finish over the sunburst. If the guitar in question is "nitro" finish or "poly" finish will play a far larger role into how well the finish will hold up.

I have a used sunburst j-bass and the only thing that shows mostly are nicks because they get into the laquer and the nicks look white from the small damaged area scratches do show but not too bad btw don't let scratches discourage you about the finish. The finish is killer aand it looks a lot better in person then any photo i have seen.

I got a strat copy that is loaded with nicks and scratches (most of them by me, it was third-hand ) Looks great, and espeacially around where a pick would tear it up it doesn't really look half bad. Since strats are typically made from lighter woods like ask or aldar, nicks are very apparent throughout the black and red area, but on stage no one would care. Yeah scratches and dents don't show too well on this color, so don't worry about it. you could always use scratch remover or the guitar care kit found oin this site somewhere.

Besides, scratches and dents on a strat look awesome! 8)
