i was practicing volume swells, not necessarily techniques but basically what sounds good.
well my pinky started hurting , so switched to ring finger still hurt.
is it better to use finger plucking or pick and vary pick attack?
i thought it sounded good, no joe bonamassa though, not even close.
but, progress.

just wondering if you allhave any tips?

Agreed. With some practice you could probably find a good technique just using your hands, but a volume pedal makes things much easier IMO, and you can get a good passive volume pedal for a fairly low price these days.

Is that what most players use a volume pedal for?

will consider the pedal, this is one of my goals,
is to achieve the violin effect with the volume knob.
Just adds something, a different dynamic, a flavor
that I must add to the arsenal .

Hi bluestrattone: I can only get those speedy Bonamassa Blues Deluxe violining effects by hooking my pinky round the volume knob on the guitar. Can't do it accurately enough with the pedal.

On the other hand, years ago I saw Knopfler on stage doing his type of swells with a pedal, and when I tried it I found there is something about that particular sound that works better with your foot than your finger.

On the other hand again (that must be the third hand), I've also seen Knopfler playing a club date and doing the swells on the guitar's knob. So it seems he's mastered both techniques.

And that's what I think you should do. The two methods produce slightly different sounds, and we probably want as many choices as we can get.

Cheers - C

I've had the same problem, but just like when you learn the guitar for the first time it hurts. Getting used to volume swells takes time. What might make it easier is changing the volume knob to something wider so you won't have to knurl you finger so much. I've thought about either a tele knob or a gibson speed knob. I've been looking for a gold tele control knob set with a pearloid top....

One of my Strats has a knurled Tele-like volume knob for that purpose only and it works rather well.

Yikes! A master of his instrument, by the look of things. I don't want to know anything at all about how he gets his swells...
