I would have to chose the highway 1 over the american because it is less expensive and i thought it had a better tone than the american. I had tried both guitars out and thought that the highway had played better and had a better all around feel to it. I would choose the highway 1 over the american anyday.

Perhaps, the tone has to do with the highway one having more wood, routed two single coils and one humbucker as opposed to the american standard routed for two humbuckers and on single coil. I also found that the highway one to be a tad heavier than the american standard. I also like the highway one over the american standard.

Save some bucks and get the highway. It's a good solid guitar and it'll be good to you.

I just purchased my H1 back before Christmas. It is my first electric so I'm not that much of an expert. However, I have played every day since she came home with me and have had no disappointments. I 've only played acoustic in the past so I don't have much of a comparison and all guitars do play different. I played several during my search and always kept coming back to the H1. I guess it's all in what you want , but I don't think you can go wrong with the H1.

I was just in the same situation. I sat down with both of them and decided on the American. Both solid guitars just liked the feel of the American a little better.

The necks on the new Am Standards are pretty darn sweet. Come to think of it they're pretty darn sweet guitars all around. I have a Highway and an American Vintage FSR --- which is great, but man, the new Am Standards are sweet to play in my experience.

Can anyone who has/had a HWY1 tell me how long it takes before it begins to start looking like a relic? My main guitar is a Schecter C-1 Classic, and it has so much finish on it, I don't think it will ever fade. I've beaten the mess out of it over the past 2 years, and the finish remains the same. I've never had a guitar with a thin finish, and I was hoping someone could tell me how time will affect it and what it will look like. Also, people who say they like the HWY1 better because it is cheaper and haven't seen it should look at it. I think the dark finishes look like plastic (especially black), but the lighter-colored finishes are pretty sweet.
