So, after reading about this guy's 1967 stratocaster, he says that the neck on his vintage strat is thinner than the neck on the Highway 1, which has a modern C shaped neck.

Can someone here please elaborate on these differences? How would they compare to, say, a soft V in comfortability and thickness?

I have small hands (har har, yes yes) and have found the soft V to be the most comfortable for me to play. Having an AV57RI, it's more comfortable for me than a modern C but not as comfortable as the soft V on the 50's Road Worn I've tried.

So...can someone who has had experience with these offer up some kind of comparison between the modern C, vintage C, and the soft V?

I can't seem to find a guitar store with a vintage C neck profiled guitar :?

Fender necks have been all over the place over the years; plus they really varied in the early years.

In that post about the '67 Strat the OP may be talking about the nut witdth when he says the neck is smaller than a Highway 1. I have played a real '67 - hell, I still am kicking myself for not buying it back in 1985 when these were only worth about $600-$800, but I was starting grad school and money was too tight for "just an old guitar" (those late-60s post-CBS guitars were kind of "player" guitars back then; they hadn't gone up like the pre-CBS models - they jumped closer to pre-CBS prices in the late 80s). At any rate the neck was very narrow (probably more like 1 9/16" instead of 1 5/8") and kind of medium-depth. The only modern neck that I've found comparable is the Ernie Ball/Music Man Silhouette Special neck - it's pretty close in width/depth (but with a modern radius).

In terms of Fender, the closest is going to be an AV '62, but they do get a bit fatter at the 12th fret than I remember that '67. The Fender CS '66 is close, but for some reason the CS likes to make the necks fatter in depth than any real one I've come across.

Hope that helps.

2 of my 3 strats have modern 'C' profiles, and third is a Custom Shop Deluxe with a 65 C. This for me is far more comfortable and playable. I feel that i can really get of it and it fits perfectly the profile of my palm when playing. The 65 C is far more chunky in the back than a modern C. But neck width feels around the same. All the 'V' s i ve played, have never felt quite right to me personally. Just dont feel right in my hand. I try not to get bogged down in numbers and measurements of necks. Its all about how the guitar feels in your hands. Two guitars with the 'same' neck measurements can feel and play totally different. Hope this helps. Sorry if it dont. Just my two pence. :D
Keep looking and try as many as possible.

The Fender Modern Player guitars have a regular C neck.
