so, i read the history of blackie, and its crazy how he found three vintage guitars for 100 each and put it together. my question: is this still possible today? to find parts like that and build a guitar that good?

I've built about two dozen Strats in that manner -- eight of them for myself.

Well I think it's a safe bet that in this day and age, nobody in their right mind will buy three vintage Strats (doubtlessly priced well in excess of five figures each), only to cannibalize them in order to construct some nebulous "dream guitar".

I build mine with all-new components, or those which have been only slightly "used".

Even if you had the parts, knowing what your doing would be the first step.

If you have never tinkered with strat guitars it would pay to buy a couple of old pawn shop squiers and tinker with modding them. Do some reading also. Work your way up.

Keep in mind Blackie's parts weren't 'vintage' when he did it. Merely a few years old.

You could easily mix and match parts like he did.

Hi gil5280: THEN DO!

But listen, here's the bit where Clapton got really clever. He didn't use vintage guitars, just slightly battered contemporary ones where it didn't matter about ripping them apart and slapping them back together.

See how that could work? ...Aaaaaaaah!

Good luck - C

EDIT: Oops - Twelvebar was making much the same point just as I was posting this. Only he put it more succinctly...

I would follow this advise. I've heard it's possible to put together a guitar out of quality parts, and it ends up sounding horrible.
