Another clue is that my neck isn't a "V" neck (I have owned both Clapton and Buddy Guy sig strats and currently own a CP50 so I recognize the shape), it's more of a "C" shape...

Hi collinsml: fab Strat, congrats!

I also have a Fiesta Red '57RI bought new last year. Regarding the neck, mine is supposed to be a soft V - in fact it is so soft you could almost call it a hard C. If you see what I mean. So I'm not sure the carve of the neck is much of a clue to dating.

Anyhow. If we could only have one Strat it would just have to be Fiesta! The ultimate Fender color. Luckily, we can have more than one Strat (hee-hee!)...

Cheers - C

There is a lot of hand shaping of the necks which results in some being more "V" shaped than others; it is hard to date them by that alone.

However, it is also well known that the early '57s and '62s (specifically the CBS Fullerton reissues) did have the same neck shape that is often referred to as a "small-shouldered C" - per Tom Wheeler's book "The Stratocaster Chronicles". Those dates are pretty smudged; I can't tell if it is an 1980s model or a 1990s.

FMIC did work to change the '57s to a true "V" shape but I'm also fairly sure that didn't happen until a few years after FMIC took over because they were more concerned with getting the production started in their factory (circa late 1985/early 1986). They also reworked the neck shapes to be more "vintage" for both the '57 and the '62 when the current American Vintage series came out in early 1998.

All, thanks for all the insightful input! Keep it coming! I'm hoping someone will chime in with some authoritative info on pot-dating! :D

Well, it wasn't near so strong in the old days. Or did you mean something different...?

Don't worry: there's plenty here with a sensible answer to that question.

Cheers - C

I think you got a great deal.

+1, you definitely got a great deal. I bet it sounds phenomenal. My only experience paying a AVRI Strat was the 1983 Fullerton model I played which is owned by a friend, but all the ones I have seen looked and sounded great. Enjoy!

Fetch, the AVRI I sold was triple sunburst, not Fiesta Red...so you can breathe a sigh of relief...you didn't miss anything! :)
