Just wanted to say Hello! I am new to this forum.

I just purchased my first fender Start and it happens to be a Big Apple model, with double humbuckers! I am eager to learn more about this Start, especially since it seems to be quite unique as far as Fenders go. I did do a search here in the forums and did not find much regarding the history of the Big Apples. If you have any historical information regarding this model, I would love to hear about it.

Anyway, hope to make some friends here in the forums and looking forward to chatting with more of you guys soon.

Brian

I have one, too. A '97 sunburst with maple board. I love it to pieces.

I know a bit of the history of these - and the OPs is a nice looking one with an added mirror pickguard. Here goes the history (as I know it)

The Big Apple was one of 3 "Hot Rodded American Standard" models that came out in either late 1995 or early 1996. Basically these took the American Standard and added different pickups, different finishes and either a pearloid pickguard or a tortoise shell pickguard (depending on the color). The 3 models were:

1. Big Apple Strat - has a Duncan '59 in the neck position and a Duncan Pearly Gates Plus in the bridge position.

2. Lone Star Strat - 2 Texas Special single coils and the Duncan Pearly Gates Plus pickup in the bridge position.

3. Roadhouse Strat - 3 Texas Special pickups

These guitars lasted until July 2000 when the American Series line replaced the American Standard line. Fender did keep these models going but they renamed them to reflect that they received all the updates (except pickups) that came with the American Series:

1. American Double Fat Strat - new version of the Big Apple Strat with the same pickups

2. American Texas Special Fat Strat - new version of the Lone Star Strat with the same pickups

3. American Texas Special Strat - new version of the Roadhouse Strat with the same pickups

These lasted until about July/August of 2003 when they were replaced by these models:

1. American Strat HH - now with new humbucker pickups wound by Fender and with the S-1 switch for splitting the coils and providing different wiring options; however, they no longer had special finishes and mostly had black or white pickguards.

2. American Strat HSS - now with 2 Tex-Mex single coils and a Fender-wound humbucker. Also has the S-1 switching to split the coils and offer other wiring options.

The "American Texas Special Strat/Roadhouse Strat" model was discontinued at this time.

The American Strat HH was discontinued in either late 2006 or early 2007. The American Strat HSS was updated in 2008 to the current American Standard Strat HSS (while it has the same Tex-Mex single coils and Fender humbucker as the previous version the current models do not have the S-1 switch).

Probably more info than you asked for, but hope this helps.
