i am looking to acquire another strat and was looking at two specific ones. one is a 2 color and the other a 3 color tobacco burst. both are similiar axes, both stock, an '04 and an '05. the three color was priced about a $100 more than the 2-color.

my quandry - do the 3-color bursts generally bring higher prices than the other?

Sunbursts cost more then solid colors.
2 or 3 color sunburst should be the sama price.
Maybe contact Fender about this issue.

They have to use better looking wood (no knots, etc.) on the sunburst models, because you can see the wood.... (better wood, more money).

i buy the whole "painted versus burst" theory but on a used strat is it normal to pay more for a three color than a two color?

There is no difference between the 3 and 2 colour bursts except that they use a bit of red in the 3 colour bursts, so personally, no I don't think paying more for a 3 colour burst model is normal.

There must be another reason for the price difference.

Maybe it's the year difference that's bumping the price up. Who's selling them???

3 color sunburst is higher in price, look at the new ones on their site and then look at the price list.

I think the 3 color sunburst is $100 more if I`m not mistaken. But it`s a beautiful finish and worth it.

I would say it takes more labor to do a 3 color then a 2 color sunburst or a solid color. While it sounds right that better woods would be used as the wood shows through the burst, but after several years the solid colors tent to bring a higher resale. Don't they? But then what does that say about the better wood?

they might use different wood for the different sunbursts. ie. ash vs. alder.

I've always seen an extra $100 for 3-tone sunburst models because as already mentioned; there's extra time/labor (takes more skill to make a nice burst than to cover a guitar with one color) and you're also using 3 colors instead of one. Personally I like the 3-tone more.

Three-color sunburst is the most popular Fender color. Additional labor and materials are required and hand selected stock for the body as the grain will show through. All of these factors add to the cost of the product and subsequently the consumers price.
