I've been looking around on ebay and found bodies with a large rectagular hole where the pickups go just like this one http://cgi.ebay.com/1993-AMERICAN-FENDER-STRATOCASTER-ULTRA-STRAT-BODY-RARE_W0QQitemZ320207479620QQihZ011QQcategoryZ41406QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I mean dosen't the bodies usually have 3 holes, one for every pickup. If it has one big hole shouldn't that affect the sound of the guitar?

Yep, that's a swimming pool route. From what I've heard, if you dig this route out even more, including the control cavities (basically dig out everything that the pickguard covers), then it will give you slight hollow-body type of sound. I'm not too sure this is a good idea though, strength of the body might be at risk, oh well.

Here's a reference for ya, it seems to be popular:

I personally wouldn't buy that body. He could be right, it might be an strat ultra body. It just doesn't look right right to me, the comfort cuts don't look deep enough. But I'm not familiar with strat ultras.

Maybe somebody here on the forum can tell you more about it.

The swiming pool routs were used on some of the early nineties american strats. I had a 91 American that had that route on it. And it was one of the best blues strats I've ever played. To me the route doesn't matter its all covered by the pickguard anyway. And I dont find that it affects the sound in any way. All it does is give you more pickup possibilitys. Without haveing to modify the body. :D

So, there's nothing "rare" about this body, like the seller says right???

It may be "rare" in that it's flamed. but once a guitar's been taken apart and sold for it's component parts is the resulting FrankenStrat a "rare" beast? :D

Dunno.

It's pretty and the swimming pool route is something Fender messed around with for awhile to speed up production and cut costs. Lots of us Strat guys didn't care for the change because it was rumored to negatively affect tone (but mostly because it was a change and that makes us tense) so Fender went back to the regular routing options.
