first thing i did with mine was to add a fender roller nut. stays right in all the time most likely the claw either needs to be tightened on the trem . also put the other screws in thghten them down all the way then back off 1/2 turn
add the roler nut because this removes friction on the nut. or refile them so the strings slide through freely and add a drop of iol
the roller nut is cheaper a good set of nut files is a hundred bucks roller nut 28 to 35 depending where you buy it.

How the hell does anyone keep strats in tune???

I don't. I just "play very quietly and very out of tune," to quote Jimi Hendrix.

Seriously, when the one I'm playing gets too out of tune, I switch to another.

In the 2010 book " The Ultimate Fender Book " on the DVD included in the book, Carl Verheyen explains how on his vintage strat that he plays in the video it is set up as floating as to be able to bend up or back down to pitch.
That strat is an actual 59.

I have an AVRI 57 strat and i have no problems with tuning. I can dive bomb it and itll still be perfectly in tune. I can pull it out of the case after a few days and not a problem. My bridge isnt floating. One thing i also do is when i change the strings i put graphite in the string slots on the nut and maybe a liitle on the saddles. Seems to help with tuning as well as smoother operation when using the trem.

It needs 5 springs if you want to use the tremelo. Or buy 2 guitars and have your roadie tune it as you play the first guitar then swap each song and roadie tunes it again. Fenders have had issues always but 5 springs does help, also the finest tuners must be used in a Fender. Sorry about the roadie gag but it's real. Not even a Fender Strat is perfect

And you have to realize that a vintage tremolo will not stay in perfect tune regardless of setup. It is a flawed system (nothing is perfect) and WILL go out of tune.

You have to fiddle with it regardless.

I have to disagree with that. I have no problem keeping mine in tune at all.

Got to agree with Nick, I don't either. But maybe it's because all of mine have five springs plus a wooden block? Oh, well, I tried, lol.

It's actually a fine balancing act.

1. Like everyone else has mentioned, put those screws back in (what were you thinking?).
2. Keep the string windings at the tuning keys to a minimum (you can get lots of slippage here)
3. If you really divebomb the trem maybe consider a Jackson with a Floyd (that's why the double locking trem was invented).
