I would like to find ways to darken up the headstock on
my cp60s, considering it has a lavquer finish.
If possible without sanding

I think the only way to do so would be to completely refinish it, which would involve sanding and more.

Fast response,
I was afraid of that.

I had seen someone use dark shoe polish(waxy one) not
the liquid, but was used in relicing a maple neck.

Leaving in the sun works for hardware. I wonder if it would work for lacquer too.

If so, does UV light work?

UV is a good idea - but you'd need a 3000 watt lamp or something for that to show an effect and I'm not sure you'll find it easy to get - moreover, the sudden increase of your use of electricity can make certain people suspicious... should they then find a UV lamp...

Anyway, possible, yet not practical.

Hi bluestrattone: the CP'60s has a polyurethane finish on the neck if I'm not mistaken. So why not just buy an aerosol of tinted urethane and spray on a few thin coats?

Or just leave it near a window to catch plenty of daylight. Even urethane darkens over time - as the lovely milky pale finish on my 2005 MIA's maple is there to show... sadly.

Cheers - C

Hi again BST: well that is nitrocellulose, while your CP'60 is finished with polyurethane on the neck. Some here are going to want to say it is OK to spray nitro over urethane - but I wouldn't do it myself.

I'm afraid I can't help you with brands from an ocean away, but I can tell you that where I live there are suppliers of polyurethane who offer it both clear and tinted, and in gloss, satin and matte options too. I'd be completely amazed if that isn't available where you are too - but you'll have to search for it yourself.

One brand I do know exists on both sides of the Atlantic is Plasti-Kote and I do know that they make a polyurethane lacquer in an aerosol. However, I haven't seen whether they do a tinted one or not.

I'm sure a bit of searching will find you what you need. A hint would be to search amongst furniture/carpentry type sources rather than amongst luthier products...

Cheers - C

There's an old trick to age some guitars using a can of burning cigarettes, thus yellowing or tinting the necks. Do this in the garage, shed, workshop. As far as darkening a rosewood neck, try using Gibson Premium Fretboard Conditioner. I apply it with a Q-tip, let it set until it starts to dry, then wipe it clean with a white, lint-free cloth.
