I have a 2006 Custom Shop Strat, Mercedes Blue with Clapton electronics, and I'd like to find out what the tremolo block is made of. I'm assuming either zinc or steel. It appears to be painted grey.

Anyone out there know?

Hold a magnet next to it and see.

Do you have a magnet?

Quite easy to find out, if the magnet sticks, it's steel. If not, scrape through the paint if it's a gold color, it's brass if silver gray, it's pot metal.

I knew it wasn't brass. A magnet sticks to it, which I assume means it's steel and not zinc?

PS: what is pot metal?

If it's a custom shop strat, it's cold-rolled US made steel, no lead or any of that stuff. Pot metal is another term for Zinc.
