That's not the serial number but a patent number.
The serial should be on the neckplate.
If you remove the neck from the body you should see stamped dates.

I'm not sure but if it is the correct date you're a lucky man.

Thanks for the replies I have been reading a bit about strats and I am now fairly sure it is a 67(right headstock and logo etc but think a couple of bits have been changed, it has a 5 way selector switch and one of the little bits that hold the strings on the headstock has been removed and the screw hole filled.
Even though it is not all original I guess its still worth a couple of hundred?

Why don't you post a pic of the guitar, headstock and neck end. Then we'll be able to give you a good idea.

Don't sell it till you've spoken with an expert. It should be worth quite a bit more than you would expect if it's a 67.

See the Fender Lounge, it's one of the first topics.

Since there are many "experts" out there who might or might not hand you a line about the value of your guitar, I'd suggest the following:

Take many good pics of your strat. Include the headstock, stamped neck end, back, front and maybe remove the pickguard and get a shot of the routing. Show as many dents, dings and buckle rash as you can.

Then go to Grunh.com and send him the pics and $50. Gruhn is the master vintage guitar guru. No one knows more.

Just find the appraisal link on his homepage and you're on your way. Plus, a Gruhn appraisal goes a long way when selling a vintage guitar. I did a quick check of his inventory and mid to late 60's strats in VG to EXC condition are going for between $18,000 and $27,000 depending on condition. You owe it to yourself to get a good, reliable appraisal. Not from some local guy at the GC or corner guitar store. When talking about instruments of this caliber a $50 investment is a small amount to pay.
