So wouldn't it make sense that the absolute WORST were right before the major steps were taken (in 1981, I believe, not 1982, though they were still working on it then)? Like: it's always darkest just before the dawn.

Whether you think the slide in quality started in 1965 (with the CBS takeover) or 1975, the lowest point was probably 1981, at which point they started to stop the slide. You didn't have the finish falling off of guitars in the '60s or mid-'70s.

Actually, the 25th Anniversary Strat was a Porche Silver at first. Then the paint started falling off all the guitars. They changed over to a gold color after that.

No, the 25th Anniversary models were first a white pearloid color (a water based finish that they tried because of pressure from the Air Quality Management District and the EPA) THEN switched to the Porsche silver metallic paint.

About 500 were that white finish that sometimes flaked and peeled off.

As it aged, the silver often took on a goldish color!

Here's one of the first white ones:

(there was one with an all-zeroes serial number I believe).

Yeah, I sort of wish I had bought one back then.
My neighborhood shop (West Allis Music) had one (silver) hanging there for quite a while! But I didn't have the cash to buy new strats -- older used ones were a much better buy!

Their going for about $2400 these days. That's a lot of money for vintage vibe. I'd rather spend that on a Custom Shop axe now. Hell, today's Am. Deluxes are better guitars then those and a hell of a lot cheaper.

1970 through 1975 were the absolute worst. As to the absolute best, I'd say the current stuff. And yes, I've owned plenty of real Pre-CBS stuff.

That's the first time I've ever heard that opinion.

So quality improved in 1976 and beyond? I guess moving the serial number to the headstock helped. LOL

I'm no expert but I've owned a few guitars -
I bought a '79 Strat back in the day and didn't like it.
I bought a Japanese Strat around '85 with a Kahler and didn't like it.
I bought a new American Standard Strat in '97 - loved it!
I bought a new American Deluxe H/S/S, Mahogany body - love it!

My first electric was a brand spankin' new black Fender Musicman I bought the summer of '78 along with a used Peavy Backstage 20 amp. I flopped down $385.00 of my hard earned money (I was 15) and things haven't be quiet since :)

Pre CBS years were from foundation to 1965, when CBS purchased the company from Leo Fender. Then CBS years went from 65-85, when the CBS music department execs bought-out the company and began running it on their own. (that last part was a bit hard to explain, but I think you get the idea :) )
