Taking the monetary value out of the equation,

I will take my 2001 CS 56 NOS over the equivalent original.
I owned at one point a vintage Les Paul, today, No Thank You.

Same as I remember my Dad's 66 Sunbeam Alpine, great little car if you didn't mind being under the bonnet every day.
NO I'll take my 2004 A4 1.8T Quattro or a 05 RS4

Ha - now what interests me here is that to you that Sunbeam had a bonnet rather than a hood. Is that just because it was a British car, or perhaps you are English, or perhaps hoods are bonnets and trunks are boots over there in Connecticut, New England? The intricacies of firing English back and forth across the Atlantic never cease to trip me up!

Anyway. I trust you are favoured/favored with an uplifting/elevating day...

Cheers - C

I have a strong suspicion that a modern Classic Vibe Squier or Mexican Standard is on average a better instrument in any measurable way than the equivalent factory finished Strat from several decades ago.

The bar has simply gone up and up.

Hee-hee - I bet that is going to be sheer sacrilege to some of the vintage purists! I'm getting ready to be shot down...

Ceri, No Guns On Me!!! :D I just recently picked up my very first bass guitar after being a six string player for 15 years. Anyway, it's a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass - made in '07 in Indonesia. I am flat out blown away at how well put together this guitar is!!! It is really a beauty and when new only goes for 300 bucks!! Cut the crap - this thing is awesome!! While, I'm not a bass guy per se, I would put this thing up against ANY of the 6-string guitars I own - made in USA included as far as quality and feel is concerned! Sure, I would LOVE a vintage Strat, but for my budget, I'd rather have a bunch of players such as the J Bass below.... $79 bucks BTW.

Oh man, that is gorgeous! Congrats on that! 8)

I have a similar story: though a non-bass player I somehow set my heart
on a Reissue '75 JB - but just couldn't seriously justify running to the US
edition. So I finally plumped for the MIJ '75 with the natural finish body.
Very nice to be sure - but mine has the cream binding and pearloid block
inlays. Which I like - but I like your black ones better!

If that Squier VM JB had been around at the time I'd have snapped it up
without a care in the world for which factory it came out of. Neat!

I think these days with some of the Squier and MIM product Fender are
their own stiffest competition. That's kinda cool!

Cheers - C

PS Do your '75 pictures also belong on Phil415's "bound necks" thread...?

Ceri :)
I am French, though these days, whenever I return to France, I'm complimented on how well I speak for an american, but here stateside most think I'm from South Africa :?
Having traveled all over Europe by the time I was 12, once emigrated stateside and lived in the midwest, east coast, new england I never developed a distinct regional accent .
Oh well

Yes !! Thank You !! For the uplift comment, I just completed a roof and structural renovation for a client and I'm taking a breather for a few day's.
Taking stock of a home-owner's projects.
(1) The wife wants that new Dishwasher hooked up
(2) The Cabin in the back of the property(estate) is a total rehab 8)
(3) A Garage loaded with yet to be installed new Doors and Windows
(4) My 3 guitar projects in the basement in the process of stripping and deciding which hardware to upgrade with

That should take up the next few days and...then some

The Sunbeam I had , when I would pull into a gas station I would tell the attendant "put in 2 quarts of oil and check the gas". Wasn't bad on gas but boy could that thing drink oil! To be fair it was a 2nd or 3rd hand-me-down while in High School. Lasted a couple of more years...

I will as soon as I figure out the new set up.

Need to relax, time to hit a few notes !!

Very.. Very Nice..

Have you switched to gold Grovers and tailpiece and bridge or is it the photo that is giving me an illusion on the I-Mac??

Here are my Three Projects, in various stages of being stripped then sanded
Second shot is a Squier Precision Bass ( bought for $10 ) I couldn't help myself.
The J.B. Player has been around for 20 years, time for an upgrade, the small log style guit. is also an old acquaintance.

G'Day, Magna....

Mate you see no illusions..

I have replaced the Tuners, Stop Tail Peice & Bridge to Gotoh parts until I can afford the Gibson parts.

I have put gold JD Strap locks on as well. This baby is a real tone monster... Makes my back a bit tired though being a solid body of 9 pound.

Hey I love that JB player you have there, I can picture it with a nice Anodized Gold pick guard with Black pup covers, black switch tip and black knobs.

Or the reverse, Black pickguard with gold pup covers, switch tip and knobs.

And a nice birds eye Maple neck fiitted with Sperzel Locking Tuners to top it off.

All gold hardware....

Then I reckon it will appear custom.. I love the dark grain colour.

What type of wood is it brother ?

Well Today was actually a day that made rethink the two strat projects.
I started out ordering a Rosewood neck, 22 frets, 62C profile, Abalone dots, 6105 frets, 1.750 at the nut.
Anyway, long story short, $150 with shipping but, 6 weeks wait time.
So went to Guitar Center to just check out Black Friday Shopping Day...
$99 for a Squier Bullet in white body, rosewood neck.
Problem Solved !!!

Bought the Squier, as soon as home, cut the strings dismantled neck from body.
(1) the Squier body will replace the white J.B. Player body (temporarily)
(2) the Squier Neck will go to the brown (soon to be black) body.
Checked for fit, some minor filing and set up but an almost perfect fit.

Those new Parts on the Les Paul are nice, ironically I'm about to post for sale on E-Bay my old tune o matic bridge, studs, Kluson waffle back tuners
That I took off my 59-61 Custom Les Paul (sold it back in 93).

Wow - that LP cleaned up nicely! That was a great score on those two guitars, and you've done a great job getting them back to top form!

Ok Thanks everybody for your kind words and support on this post.

The 73 Gibson LPC and the 76 Fender Stratocaster will now be my two gigging guitars.

Here is the Strat with a new Graphite Nut, Complete Refret, new pickguard with 1999 Alnico 5 American Standard pups & CTS pots under the bonnet.

I have kept the Tuxedo look on her.

Finally a 2009 Two Point Fender Tremolo System installed.

The above upgrades are installed on this time machine becase like I said before, she will be out dancing with me for many years to come....not lying dorment under a bed.

Here is the Strat in completion to my taste, she is now my #1.

ENJOYYYYYY...... :D

So what did the total costs come to per guitar including all purchase and all expenses (parts freight and labor etc)?
