G'day, the Les Paul Custom form '70-'72 would be worth $3,300-$3,900 U.S. and a '76 sunburst Strat if original would be worth between $1,500-$2,000 but where it's been modded(quite Poorly)it would be worth considerably less. The Les Paul would be your best bet financially even if they were in mint condition but as is ,the Les Paul isn't in quite as bad condition as the Strat but is still way over priced considering the mods to it,neither one is a bargain by any means.

I sincerely thank all of you for your valued contribution with assisting me in making a decision.

I do agree that both require some extensive work to return them to their original state which entails spending more $$$$ on top of the purchase.

I am currently an active performing muso that plays in three Bands that require my intstruments to be at their performing peak with reliability.

As much as I want an old Rocking Horse, I will seriously consider the pros and cons of both instruments.

STRAT:-
Period Correct Strat replacement parts= Vintage Bridge, Complete Pickguard Swap, Removal of locking nut at the headstock and finally a luthier restoration job on the neck. Lots of $$$$

LP CUSTOM:-
Period Correct LP replacement parts= Vintage Tailpiece, Period Correct PUPS but if thats the option I take, it means removal of the pups splitter switches...that requires luthier work to patch the holes $$$$, I can live with the pups that are in it now and keep those splitter switches. I hate non natural holes on a guitar.
Neck will need to be refretted at some stage soon. $$$$
and lastly the tuners I would change back to period correct tuners.

In the conclusion of it all, I am sensing that the Gibson is going to be the more logical purchase but at a $1500 price tag $ Not $2000.

I will need to get a luthier to refret the neck for my purpose of using it to gig with...not allow it to lay dorment under a bed or elsewhere.

Thanks again everybody, I will let you know how I get on with decision today.

Cheers..

I would get the LP and play it until there was nothing left of it.

G'day again everybody :D

Well it is very easy for me to describe to you how I am feeling at the moment..

ABSOLUTE ADRENALIN X1000

After spending 3 hours in the store with my contact disecting the strat and the LP, I presented all arguements to the seller via the shop contact.

The seller sadly let both of them go to me at $500 for the Strat and $1000 for the LP.

I had to contain all of my excitement to sound professional.

So there it is, not bad considering I initially went into the store to buy a $10 set uf strings. They are a very expensive set of strings at $1500 :P

I am now the proud owner of a 1976 Fender 3 tone sunburst maple neck Strat.

I am also the Proud owner of a 1970-1972 Gibson Les Paul Custom.

Prior to this buy, my next purchase was going to be a Gibson SG Standard Ebony at $2000 AUD. That has been cancelled now that I have me two Rockers..

Thanks again to everbody who responded with their brilliant knowledge base... You guy's really helped me to present the right arguement.

If you were local to me I would be ya all a beer.

OMG, what a story I have to tell my two young boys when they grow old and responsible enough to inherit all of my Fenders/Gibson's guitars and amps.

Thanks Again.

No probs, mate: the internet means we're all local. So pop along to this shop, buy me that beer and they will see it gets to me:

www.realale.com

Thank you! :D

Meanwhile. Congrats on your purchase - and on your haggling skills! You now have a long road ahead restoring both those geets. If you feel like running a thread on it here there will be plenty of enthusiastic watchers! 8)

Good luck - C

I'm guilty of replying to a thread without reading all the way through it. I have deleted my first reply and replaced it with this.

Good job getting both of them at such a great price. Things like that don't happen very often but when they do it feels so good.

Well Done !!!

If I may?
As far as vintage value, I would disregard that idea as both guitars were well traveled and battle scarred and suffered triage.

On the strat, the body looks good, a few dings but that is normal, I would remove the Kahler trem and Lock nut, fill the holes with a mix of maple very fine sawdust and clear adhesive ( look on Stew-Mac's website or LMI's website.

Replace the bridge with a Fender 6 screw Vintage trem.
( Click to www.partsisparts.net and guitar-parts.com both are licensed by Fender for replacement parts.)
replace the pickguard as it is burnt toast, new Pups, 250k pots (I would stay with SSS from that era or earlier, how are the tuners? new pickguard screws seems a few are missing and while the strat is apart a good cleaning and guitar polish should do the trick. I would not attempt to refinish either the neck or body (unless the frets are totally gone.)

On the Gibson, you may want to return to a conventional tailpiece and bridge, Klusons are manufacturing the exact tuners for that era Les-Paul,
you can also get the tuner grommets in oversize to make up the increased tuner hole diameter.
Again a thorough cleaning and polishing.

Let us know how the projects end up with pics, I'm envious cause it looks like fun...
if the pups are OK I would leave them until finding an appropriate set.
I always liked the option of dual to single coil taps on humbuckers.

I love being a member of this forum.. You guys are just awesome.

I view this treasure chest find as my return of all the good I haved passed forward to others. I truly believe this. There is no such thing as luck.

Ok down to business, I will need your best to help me restore the Strat back to it's original specs.

I feel that you guy's are now apart of my team to help me restore this thing.

Doing this is going to be a slow step by step task like dab dab don't wipe or do it then think.. I wan't to get this right.

I feel that I will be preserving a peice of history that has made many people dance.

As far as the Gibson LP Custom is concerned, we restrung it today... set the intonation and whammo... wow what tone on the bridge bucker that I loved using, the whole pup was full and warm sounding then splitting it with the little switch and getting the high presence of a single coil with typical 60 cycle hum also produced a great tone.

The neck pup is either dead or it has a bad pot or bad solder somewhere...
Other than that I can do a gig with this thing next week. The frets are low but can do more miles yet.. So I will start with the strat first.

OK, who's first.... :P

Where should I start on the Strat first. :D

Then we'll see what we've got.

Cheers - C

Good deal getting them both for that price; they are both players pieces that will give you a lot of enjoyment in both restoring them and playing them.

76 Strat.

What are your particular model's specs ?

It is a CBS era strat, 75 to 81 were 3 black pups, 3way selector(5 way from 77).
Much is maligned of the CBS era, but the fact is that decisions were being made by financial people on the basis of speeding up productions, rather than the craftsmen/women building the instruments. thus perfectly sensible decisions for cost-cutting proved somewhat vexing, as in enlarging the neck to body mount screw holes, not quite a floppy disc but just as doomed.

Today there are easily obtainable retro parts made to today's tolerances and technical benefits yet still retaining yesterday's designs.

My idea would be to upgrade the vital parts, SCN pups mated to an SI switch and TBX tone controls, or 69's and Texas special,
white pickguard/black pup covers and knobs or reverse, black pickguard, white pups and control knobs.

A Start..

Well all, tonight I had a one night stand with my 70's Strat.

As you all know I got an absolute bargain on this thing at $500 AUD.

Tonight I disected her and gave her a good bath and did a total pickguard swap out, restring and a full set up etc.

Mint Green Pickguard loaded with Tex Mex neck and middle pups and a Seymour Duncan Hotrail in the Bridge. All CTS pots and 5 way switch.

So at the moment I have just put her together to play some gig's to earn the money for Period Correct Parts, so I can totally restore her back to original Specs.

I may buy a Black pickguard because I like the Tuxedo look.

Here is a couple of photos that I have attached of a whole lotta "Rosie" complete....

I will post a trail of the photo's of this clean up job on my new baby soon.

Enjoy and keep an eye open for more pic's to come.

Very tired now.... did it all in a few hours.

when I kranked her over through my blues jnr at 1030pm here.... I felt a rush like none before...

Cheers from down under
