Original late 70's strat, or a team built custom shop repro?

I think I already know the answer, but there is just something tempting about owning a strat made in the year I was born....

I think that you'd be more satisfied having a guitar made in your year of birth than a replica. My dream is to one day own an original '54 Strat-my year of birth-I picked an expensive year to be born lol.Whereas you can get 70s era Strats for pretty reasonable prices from $18,000 early 70s Custom colours to $1,500 late 70s.With any luck you were born in the late 70s.BTW I had an ash bodied '78 Strat that weighed over 10 lbs. but rang out like a bell and sustained like a Concert Grand Steinway if you could pick up one of these puppies you would be doing well for yourself and they only go for about $1,500 - $2,000.

hey hammer2009

my opinion is that you should take the custom shop guitar because recently i read a book about the history of fender strat and it said that the old guitars werent as detailed as the guitars nowadayw bacause there werent a patern if you now what i mean every neck had different shape etc different bodies.fender himself said that in the begging they made guitars grom every wood they could find so there was different quality among "same strats"you had to be lucky to buy a good strat back then
i hope that these infos will help you out

Is there any chance that you can find a '70s Strat in your area, so that you could check it out before you buy?

If you have to mail order for one, you might not be real happy with what you got.

There's a better chance of being happy with a new Custom Shop build, of course.

Just take your time and see what's out there --- that's my opinion.

I'd be stoked to have a 70's era Strat. A nice piece of wood... 30-40 years of mojo in the making. Tasty! New custom repros are a dime a dozen. Ya I know - you might need to wait 10 months for it to be available from Fender but finding a nice vintage instrument intact...much more difficult. Make mine vintage.

Good advice from previous posts. Personally I would prefer a 58 Strat (the year I was born) but I can't afford one. You can always get a custom shop Strat down the road. If the 70's Strat is indeed your year and it plays well get it now and sell it when you can't play anymore. Save your first born this same anxiety. Buy him or her a new one when born and put it in the closet for him.

Custom Shop Strats are becoming cliche, it takes a real man play a '70's Strat with pride.
